How does drinking soda relate to childhood obesity? Richard F. Daines, M.D., New York State's Health Commissioner, explains why more milk consumption and a tax on sugar based soda are better for kids' health.

I agree that milk rather than soda especially for
children. No one needs the amount of sugar in
sodas.

Very interesting and I do agree. The tax is another matter. I guess the premises is that if they are taxed they will not be easily contributing to the sugary drinks and drink more milk?

Well, Mr. Daines makes a persuasive argument for reducing the obesity epidemic by taxing one of the main culprits. Government is striking a preventive measure against the reasons we become fat and vulnerable to weight-related diseases. However, a sin tax on sugar seems another encroachment on our rights to live just as we please without the confines of a police state. I am undecided on this issue. :)

Everything always comes down to taxing. Does anyone realize that we are taxed over and over and over several times for the same check or money. EX: you work get paid every week or bi-weekly and you spend that money at the store. Each time you spend a dollar you are taxed again. How many times can the government tax that same money? As many times as they like, obviously. They dont really care about your health. Its just another way to get a dollar out of you every time they come up with some sort of plan. Every idea cost us in one way or the other. Ither i our health are our pockets. Either way it affects your health. Think about it…

While I agree that we should limit our intake of junk food, but taxing it is not the way to go. We live in a unique country where we have choice. While a tax might cut back that consumption, we will still drink it, or eat other junk. The government should not be taxing sugar, see how much good it does for taxing cigarettes and liquor? We will always make our own choices. That is how it should be.
Now I also agree that we should also take responsibility for the choices we make, and if we do end up sick or with a disease, we cannot blame anyone but ourselves. It is not the sugar manufacturer's fault, it is ours.

Very informative. Thanks for sharing. I am not for more tax however. I do not think that will stop people from drinking soda.

I don't like the whole idea of taxing sugar. I don't live in NY anyway.
