I swim for 15 to 30 minutes a day 3 times a week. Not hard and competitive, just at a moderate pace. I feel invigorated whem the swimming is over. Works a lot of muscle groups.
swimming in the winter may sound strange BUT did you know that most places that have a pool in the high school etc offer public swimming at least for people with a doctor certificate? Check out your town or city and see what might be available for you. I am lucky and we have a therapeutic pool available for residents for $5 a year with a form signed by your doctor but even the little village I lived in back in Western NY had a pool at the high school you could use
Pros
easy on the body and you decide on the level of exercise that you do
Swimming is my favorite form of exercise in the summer; walking in the winter. It feels so good to stretch out your limbs in the warm water and get moving!
I am lucky and live in Florida now so can swim for a longer period of time but the pool gets cold due to drops in temperature at night. Yes, it sounds silly but boy can the water get icy.
I lived in Western NY and almost everywhere I have lived has had some sort of public facility for swimming if you have a doctor sign for you. In NY it was at a school about 15 minutes away. They call it therapy and most of our doctors would happily sign for us I think. I already have my slip ready for when I cannot go out back to swim. They even have water aerobics as well as free style swim. It is $5 a year for residents and about $100 for non-residents.
Pros
Feels so good especially if you have any injuries or arthritis
Cons
Yes, finding a place to swim when it gets chilly. We also have Planet Fitness here and if you have one near you and it has a pool, they have a membership for $10 a month. Right now that is a lot to many of us but it is an option if you can't walk etc.
Due to injury I cannot walk very much but do love to swim. Luckily I have a pool in my complex. I try to get out there at least 4x a week and do at least one hour of water exercise and swimming laps. I even do crunches which would be impossible to do out of the water due to my back injury.
Pros
Doctors all seem to love to hear you swim. Easy on the body yet you feel the burn and know you exercised. Builds up your cardio in a short time, Helps strengthen your core which helps your back, Relaxing and anyone can do something in the water whether it is exercise or just walking
Cons
I can't think of a single one other than watch yourself if swimming outdoors and make sure you use sunscreen
OH! If you skip your sessions be prepared to feel as though you are starting all over. Motivation to continue is feeling back to square one with reps and laps if you do not
if you have back problems this will help you a lot. I went to the ymca last year for a one week everyday just going there and swimming for my back pain and it help me a lot with the pain.
Cons
My back pain came back when I got out of the water
Swimming is a great way to exercise thos long muscles without putting stress on one's body, such as what happens when we jog or ride an exercycle. I recently had knee surgery, and was surprised when the doc said, 9 days afetr surgery, that I could use the community swimming pool. I was still taking narcotic pain pills, and fortunately my husband was near me. The bouyancy provided by the water was very relaxing and I did some stretching. But I stayed in the water too long and became chilled, and needed assisatnce when I hit the full gravity. But this did not deter me from continuing to use the pool.
Pros
Stress-free exercise. Invigorating. Takes years off one's mind (improves mental health).
