Just started taking 300 mg a day. How much should I be taking to feel a difference?

Most people aren't aware that all ALA products are not the same. I highly recommend using a solubilized, high bioavailability product that gets 2 - 3 times the ALA into your bloodstream and cells. Also, in the case of ALA, cheaper isn't better. The cheap brands use ALA purchased from China and the better brands use the proven material that is made in Italy. I use a product called ThioGel.

You can take up to 2200mg of alpha lipoic acid daily. The blood sugar lowering properties emerge at 1500mg daily. Take 300mg in divided doses, and always take with food to avoid heartburn.

Pros

When I am on my balanced protein and carb diet, ALA produces a 30 point drop post pranidal. This is a real workhorse if you are balancing protein and carbs, it is as good as metformin.

Cons

You can bottom out if you take too much. Always take with biotin, as ALA produces a biotin deficiency. NSI brand ALA has biotin in it.

I believe it has made a difference with my feet, no more shooting pains, have no idea if it has impacted BSL but I will continue to use this supplement.

Pros

I have been taking ALA for approximately 6 weeks now. I have definitely seen an improvement in the amount of nerve pain I am experiencing. It is relatively inexpensive; a bottle of 60 200mg capsules is approximately $7 at Walmart. It can also be purchased at Trader Joe's for a little more. Can also be purchased online.

Cons

May not work for everyone. Personally, I have not seen any improvement in blood sugar levels that I can attribute to the ALA alone. May be hard to find in some areas.
