My BS have been between 2 &300 and as high as 345. My Endo put me on avandia 4mg yesterday twice per day. I take metformin 1000mg twice per day,4 5mg glyburide,1 januvia 100mg. 9 pills per day. He said if my numbers didn't come down that I would have to go on insulin. I am scared to death. I know alot of you are on insulin and I am no better than anyone else I am just scared. What are your thoughts on avandia?

Avandia is a fine product, but there are other options in the thiazolidinedione (TZD) class, such as Actos. Some of the downfalls of Avandia include, edema/swelling (all TZD's), worsening of congestive heart failure (all TZD's), raising triglycerides (just Avandia), increasing LDL-cholesterol (just Avandia), weight gain (all TZD's), and price (all TZD's).
The upsides of Avandia include; treating insulin resistance which is the core defect of type 2 diabetes (all TZD's) and no hypoglycemia unless used with insulin-secretagogues like sulfonylueras such as glipizide or when used in conjunction with insulin.
Hope this helps!

I am on Advandia, Metformin, & Insulin.

Pros

The combination of all 3 work for me & has helped to get my BS lower.

Cons

I know starting the insulin is scary, but once you get going, it's no big deal & it will get easier for you as you go along. I have had no complications that I know of from the Avandia.

I know how you feel, I was in your shoes just about three weeks ago. My Doctor told me it was time to go on insulin, I asked questions and asked for advice. People here helped me and after I learned to give myself shots, and started my numbers dropped back to the normal range.

I have also taken Avandia but Doctor took me off of it but don't remember why.

Don't be afraid of insulin. It is just a step in treating D. I have been on various types of insulin for several years and they work very well. I also took advandia and had no problems with it, but my Endo took me off it because of other health problems associated with it.

Pros

Insulin will bring your blood sugar down quickly and then you can use a maintenance or long acting insulin to help maintain your blood sugar level.

Cons

Fast acting insulin can cause weight gain. You will need to watch this.
