Exercise

Since I have been working out at Curves the past since August 21, 2008, I am losing weight, losing inches, and not having to take as much insulin (I am coming down on doses and not using the regular sliding scale as much as I was). My energy level has increased. The exercise program was fitted to my needs and is working.

I work out once a week with a trainer at a gym for 30 min. and at home i walk on a treadmill for about 15min twice a week. I would do more but having a 8 month old makes it hard, but i did notice the days i work out my BS is lower

Pros

Working out helps lower you BS. I notice the days i do weight training it even goes lower.

Cons

You need to be motivated to get up and do it. If you sugars are high you get lazy. This is the time you really need to get up and "GET ER' DONE"

I worked as a personal trainer and aerobics instructor some years ago; I now have a universal gym, weight bench, recumbent bike, cardioglide and free weights in my home. Exercise is great for burning glucose, building muscle and increasing flexibility and endurance.

I have been active all of my life. I had to slow down after a back sergery but I do what I can. After I got married in 2007 I got my wife going to the YMCA with me. She had type2 diaberes. After working out for a year she went to her doctor for a check up and her doctor told her she no longer had to take meds for diabetes. It may not work for everyone ( I am still trying to get off of my meds type 2 also ) but it will help.

Pros

Helps blood sugar, improves circulation, makes you feel better, helps fight off depression, and more.

Cons

Check with your doctor before you begin, do not over do it or it could be bad instead of good for you.

Exercise is great! I road bike and mountain bike. I use an eliptical and a treadmill at times. A bit of strength training can do wonders!

Pros

The more you do it, the easier it becomes. Keeps my energy levels up, the blood sugar under control, burns fat, relieves stress, and helps to keep a clear sharp mind!!!

Cons

Can be difficult to start a routine!

30 minutes of daily exercise is what the doctor perscribed…and I am still working to get there. Love my treadmill & spend lots of time on it! Bike ride with my husband often…and we hike when we can.

Pros

Give's you plenty of energy & sense of accomplishment, no matter the effort given.

Cons

I need more discipline to create the time on a daily basis.

Interesting how quickly you can lose muscle mass… being sick on off your feet for a day or so really impacts your ability to deal with physical stress… Stetches while you are confined to bed really helps to counter the affect of being down… Weight lifting is good too, so working your muscles against gravity will benefit… the rubble stretch bands also work well for resistance training… movement is what it's all about… Exercise sitting down in your chair if you can't stand… push life… and let it push back… exercise is essential…

Great idea, Although I am often in my wheelchair and in a lot of pain, I take advantage of the gravity in the bath to exercise. It helps, but when taking your foot or leg out of the water can be difficult.

Pros

NO Pain, No Gain

After fracturing my back last June, 08, I was not able to be as active as I had been. I could barely move for three months, then I started core training in PT. ( ten months later) Just completed. Last week I started the 8 WEEKS to Maximizing Diabetes Control ( a book I recommended on our book list) The first chapter of this book is Understanding Diabetes… "tell me and I'll forget. Show me and I'll remember. Involve me and I'll understand". Confucius The second chapter , Healthy Eating… " Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs." Henry Ford After reading these first two chapters, I began my work commitment with chapter three, Being Active- The Magic of Movement… " Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it." -Lou Holtz Chapter 4, Monitoring-Don't give up on Excellence…" We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, there fore, is not an act but a habit." Aristotle… I was once upon a time very physically disciplined… sadly that doesn't count… but I do have muscle memory and a desire to rebuild strength. I try not to compare what I was once capable to where I am now. Starting over is hard. but what's the alternative? so, I am committing to laying the foundation for practicing habits that reinforce strength… I have some old habits to challenge. I've become more self indulged in this down time… the struggle is real… I'd like to say that sharing goals with others on this site is so encouraging. We must each find our own method for reaching the goals we set for ourselves, but it is so important to know that we are… keeping our promises to ourselves… Thanks for being here… it really keeps me on target to know others are working on their stuff too… yeah diabetic connect…

Pros

Doctor recommended, does help lower the sugar when it gets high and helps control it most all the time. I admit I need more discipline in this area.

walking works great for me and when I get that 'very tired' feeling in the afternoon sometimes, even when I've had a good night's sleep, I just get on the treadmill for 30 minutes or do low impact aerobics for 20 miinutes or so, and it helps my energy. I also try to do exercises with the exercise ball and I've been doing the treadmill since early this year, but these other exercises I am trying to do a few times each week as well. It does not negatively affect my blood sugar at all.
