I just went on Metformin 6 days ago, 500mg twice daily. I only take one a day for now, per my docs suggestion, along with my Lantus pen. Not having diarrhea or nausea, so far. My levels are still fluctuating, though. If nothing changes by Tue I'm going to have to start taking as prescribed. I'm hopeful that the only change will be my b/g.

I have been on it for 2 weeks. No ill effects. But, I was taking GliipMetformin since 2005, no problems there either. I also have Thyroid problems. I take 500 mg twice a day with meals. No more sugar lows and I feel much better. A1C: 5.7 on August 23, 2011 down from 12.1 on February 4, 2011! Have lost 30# in 6 weeks, not dieting, just eating healthy.

The real name for Metformin is Glucophage. The diarrhea is a dangerous side affect that can lead to Lactic Acidosis—I know—both my husband and I both have been through it and nearly died from it. Once you start having diarrhea, you can't take this drug any more. This is according to my diabetes Doctor. I hope you talk to your doctor about this and have solved the problem with another medication. I am controlling my diabetes with diet, exercise and supplements and my most recent A1c was 5.3 on June 7th, 20111.

I agree with u on that kittepurr1… Im allergic to alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll other diabetic meds.. alllllllllllllll of them…including some insulins and not able to take generic drugs due to the fillers they put in them.. we've yet to track down just one common ingredient put into generics, but at least 8 so far. Good luck for those of u still taking it… now that i got on the brand name, ive done great. Nicki

I have known a lot of people on it, it bothered most of them.I am very surprised it hasn't bothered me, since I am allergic to so many medications.

I have taken 1000 mg twice daily of Metformin. My blood glucose stays between 95 and 120 depending on when I eat but the sick feeling and diarhea is not so fun

Charlily… about the metformin… if it is financially possible, maybe you should try taking the brand name of metformin… I cud not take metformin either, but we found that I was just allergic to generic ingredients and i now take FORTAMET… it is the brand name.. no other additives.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 about 20 months ago, but have been unable to take Metformin. It really made me very sick with vomiting. Tried to take it on two separate occasions & could not.
Re: leg cramps. I have suffered with them all of my life. I was told to drink some tonic water as it cotains quinine which stops the cramps & spasms. When I took quinine pills themselves, the cramps stopped completely.
Have also been told that a bar of Ivory Soap under your bedsheet helps considerably. Have not tried it, but think it's worth trying.
Am taking Ropinirole in combination with Neurontin & those have helped.

I eat a banana and a yogurt everyday…helped with leg cramps tremendously! Low Potassium levels cause bad leg cramps for me. I take Metformin 500 x2 everyday also. The only thing I do not like about them is the pill size. They are huge. I also have thyroid problems so that doesn't help with swallowing them.

I read a few comments in here about leg cramps; is that something that can happen with Metformin? I've been on it for years but just this past year started having charlie horses like crazy. I thought it was the increased dosage of Pravachol to 80mg taken at bedtime now. The other bottles never said that on them. I take a calcium and Magnesium pill also now to counteract the cramps. I also take an Actos in am and Prandin lunch and dinner. Metformin 3x a day for a while now. Prandin increased this year. Metformin helped me loose weight and Actos and Prandin can increase appetite.

This product is not for everyone, I had real serious kidney problems with this medicine.

I was started on this medicine when first diagnosed and seemed ok , but immediately I developed a painful rash across my chest and neck and thighs. It itched and hurt to the touch. I was told this was the most effective and best med to try and be on, but the side effects were awful and I could not see great results after 1 month in my sugar levels.

Pros

May not cause weight gain.

Cons

Hard to swallow, many side effects that are not bearable.

Made me very sick no matter what dosage. It made my lower back hurt all of the time, in the kidney area. It also did not control my diabetes.
