My doctor started me on 5mcg of Byetta, when I developed type 2 diabetes, in June 2010. It was increased to two 5mcg injections daily (once before breakfast & once before supper). Eventually the injection before breakfast was increased to 10 mcg, with the before supper injection kept at 5 mcg. Then the doctor reduced the 10 mcg injection to once per day (before breakfast). I have lost weight since June 2010-dropped from 206 lbs to 186 lbs. But this includes exercising three times per week and reducing my food consumption, especially the "carbs." The doctor also prescribed Prandin, only when I know that I'm going to consume more than 300 calories of "carbs." Like when I'm going to eat pizza, pasta, or my worst weakness-Bryer's vanilla ice cream. I did not experience any nausea or stomach/vomiting problems. The doctor was also monitoring me closely-blood tests every 4months. The only inconvenience is having to keep it at or below 77 degrees F; had to use a small ice chest/cooler during the hot summer months, especially on a trip to Alabama in July 2010. It has worked for me, but with a combination of two meter checks per day, along with diet and exercise.
Seems to be working for me. I take it w/Metformin and although the side effects are not great, getting nauseated and unfortunate gas from the metformin, it could be worse I guess.
Pros
Decreases my hunger. Portable as is the glucose meter.
Cons
I still get nauseated after taking the shot. I am also on the baby aspirin regimen and when I take the shot I bleed from the injection site. Not pleasant. Taking shots in public can be a pain as is the job of tracking blood sugar levels when out and about.
I tried Byetta about three years ago. I did alright on the 5 mg starting dose but had some trouble with nausea. Then I shifted to 10 mg dose, but had continued nausea and vomiting on that dose. My doc told me this was not unusual and encouraged me to continue as the side effects would subside after a while. I did this but could never get past the side effects. I finally quit using it. I also had trouble with extreme fatigue and diarrhea which did not go away after stopping Byetta. I consulted a gastroenterologist who after several visits diagnosed me with chronic pancreatitis. I believe it was caused by the Byetta, although my endocrinologist assures me there is no connection.
Pros
It did decrease my blood sugar.
Cons
Nausea, vomiting, plus diarrhea, extreme fatigue and possible chronic pancreatitis which persists after stopping drug.
i have been on it for a few months. my dr told me that she saw people who lost 30+ pounds in a single month. i lost 4. i feel fuller faster but i have to time it just right or i feel really really sick.
Pros
it keeps me from eating as much as i might otherwise.
Cons
if i don't time it just right i feel sick to my stomach for hours. morning shot is the worst. i am so hungry that it is hard for me to wait the 15-20 minutes i have to wait after taking the shot.
I am taking this medication in combination with Metformin Extended Release, and it has truly helped! I have lost about 15 lbs in about 6 months. Not as much as I would like, but slow but sure!
Until I started taking this product I could not remember ever feeling full from eating. I've lost 25lbs. and I have only been on it a little over a year.
I used twice a day for over 1 year.Worked well to control Blood sugar levels. Although they would get low in the evening sometimes. Even though I had enough carbs to prevent that.
Pros
Good to control levels. Lost weight and help for appetite control.
Cons
Quite using due to change of employment so it was no longer convenient to use.
I have been on Byetta for 4 months and have lost 30lbs. I was not happy about having to take a shot, but it has changed my life!
Pros
I lost 10lbs the first month and 5lbs the second and third month. I have been very active trying to lose weight and after taking the shot it just melted away. My blood work came back with all my numbers within range except my blood sugar which showed major improvement for the first time in 15yrs!
Cons
The first few days after starting a new shot I am nauseous, but drinking a coke zero helps.
I started using Byetta 5 about 9 months ago in combination with Actos and Glyburide/Metformin.
Pros
This combination of drugs has kept my BS in control and I have lost about 27 pounds since the first of the year.
Cons
When the doctor switched me to the Byetta 10, it made me sick (vomiting all day), so we backed off back to the Byetta 5. Also this medication is very expensive. I'm in the doughnut hole with my medicare coverage now.
I've been on byetta over a year now. It took several months before I saw any changes, but now with the help of 2 other oral meds, my #'s have improved. I have no problem with nausea, only if I were to overeat or eat something too rich. It has curbed my appetite and have lost weight.
Pros
Got my A1C down to 6.7, lost over 15 lbs which were 2 of my goals since I attended the diabetic education class last year.
Cons
I experience sugar lows after pm shot. My Dr. had me take 1/2 dosage of one of my oral meds since July but still experiering lows. Next month Appt. will re-evaluate my dosage since my sugar lows are almost daily now.
It kept my blood sugar levels within normal range. As far as regulating my bloodsugar it seemed to do this better than any medication taken previously!
Cons
I felt slightly nauseous for about a week. I experienced constipation and had to stop taking it as a result.
