Category: Oral Prescription

Actos is a drug that increases your body's sensitivity to insulin. Another way to look at it is that when you take Actos, your body's insulin becomes stronger & more effective. Actos is available in 3 doses - 15mg, 30mg and 45mg. Most people take the 30mg or the 45 mg.

I guess like any drug, it depends on your unique make up. It worked on my sugar levels, but the side affect was very quick weight gain.

Pros:

This worked EXCELLENTLY in controlling my glucose levels.

Cons:

I began to gain 1-3 pounds a week after about two weeks and when I had gained nearly 30 lbs, I had the doctor take me off and revisit another plan for me. Too bad too, because I ended up on insulin instead.

I was having high readings before the dr added actos. Dropped my readings right down. I have recently stopped taking the actos and my readings are staying within the lower range.

Pros:

quick acting

Cons:

there are health alerts associated with this drug

I've been taking Actos for about 6 months now.

Pros:

My diabetes regimen of Actos, Byetta and Glyburide/Metformin, has kept my blood sugar within the recommended limits. Previously with only Glyburide/Metformin my BS count was either high and low. This combination is working well for me...I have lost 27 pounds since I started taking Actos and Byetta.

Cons:

Price is very high. I only have Medicare and am in the "doughnut hole" now.

Take 45 mg once a day, and 500 mg Metformin twice a day and my A1c's are in the low 6's, even had a 5.9.

Pros:

Works for me and I didn't notice any side effects. Originally on Avadamet, then my HMO stopped using it several months before the controversy over heart attacks, and I was switched to the combination of Actos and Metformin. If you pay any portion of the cost of Actos (no Medicare or Medicaid, etc) call 1-888-838-9866 to request info on the rebate program to reimburse up to $50 paid out of pocket. I have been getting reimbursed for my Actos for about a year and a half.

Cons:

none for me

I would be lost without my Actos. You know how your body feels right before you get sick? or when you've been in a minor traffic accident? Thats how I felt all the time until I started taking Actos.

Pros:

My muscles don't ache. Actos has also improved my liver functions.

Cons:

None for me.

Took this about a year and gained lots of weight. It was outstanding at controlling my blood glucose levels. HbA1C were in the mid 5s. However, I finally got tired of eating 1200 calories a day and walking at least an hour and still gaining 4-5 pounds a month. OTOH, my husband takes it along with metformin and once he got his diet and exercise in line he has lost weight and brought his HbA1C down from 7 & 8s to the mid 6s.

Pros:

Can be very effective at controlling blood glucose levels.

Cons:

For some people it is fat pill. And it is expensive. There is not a generic version available as of now.
