According to a 2004 review in American Family Physician, Americans spent more than $1.3 billion on weight-loss supplements in 2001. Advertisements for weight-loss supplements seem to be everywhere — television infomercials, popular magazines, even your e-mail inbox. "Eat the foods you love and still lose weight" and "Exercise in a bottle" are among the marketing ploys that sound too good to be true. And, for the most part, they are.

YMCA-based program may help prevent diabetes

YMCA-based intervention classes for persons with prediabetes resulted in greater weight loss, sustained over a longer period of time, than with control patients -- suggesting that community outreach with trained leaders may effectively delay or prevent the progression of prediabetes to T2.

Gastric stimulator induces weight loss in diabetics

Gastric electrical stimulation using the Tantalus system (MetaCure Ltd) of implantable electrodes has been studied with an eye towards improving glucose control and inducing weight loss in obese patients with type 2 diabetes.

The Tantalus system is a device that induces stomach contractility and consists of three pairs of bipolar electrodes connected to an implantable pulse generator. The device detects food intake and pulses to induce early satiety.
