FDA approves generic diabetes treatment for Impax

HAYWARD, Calif. - Impax Laboratories Inc. said Tuesday federal regulators have approved the company's application to make generic versions of the diabetes treatment Precose.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved an abbreviated new drug application for 25-, 50- and 100-milligram strengths of the tablets. Impax expects to launch all strengths in the fourth quarter.

FDA Accepts MannKind’s Afresa Application

The FDA is now reviewing a new inhalable insulin product called Afresa from MannKind Corp.

They're seeking approval for use in Type 1 or Type 2 diabetics to control high blood sugar levels -- claiming that their proprietary Technosphere technology enables this fast-acting insulin to be absorbed more easily and safely.

Levemir(R) Once-Daily Substantially Lowered Average Blood Sugar Levels Of Patients With Type 2 Diabetes In TITRATE(R) Study

Novo Nordisk announced results from the TITRATE® study showing that Levemir® (insulin detemir [rDNA origin] injection), taken once-daily, substantially lowered average blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes patients took a more active role in their treatment by adjusting their own dosing, after being trained and given an adjustment schedule by their physician. Approximately 60 percent of patients taking Levemir® once-daily reached the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) recommended average blood sugar level.
