U of L to conduct diabetes research

The University of Louisville has received $11.6 million from the National Institutes of Health to research how diabetes causes heart disease and how to prevent that from happening.
The university will establish a Center of Excellence in Diabetes and Obesity Research with the five-year grant, using the money to hire researchers, buy equipment and renovate part of a research building.

Gastric stimulator induces weight loss in diabetics

Gastric electrical stimulation using the Tantalus system (MetaCure Ltd) of implantable electrodes has been studied with an eye towards improving glucose control and inducing weight loss in obese patients with type 2 diabetes.

The Tantalus system is a device that induces stomach contractility and consists of three pairs of bipolar electrodes connected to an implantable pulse generator. The device detects food intake and pulses to induce early satiety.
