The test strips are being recalled because they may provide falsely low glucose results when the glucose level is higher than 400 mg/dL.

Some people call diabetes “the ultimate self-managed disease.” That’s because successful diabetes management rests so completely in the hands of us patients, rather than our doctor’s. These days, we have a lot of gadgets to help us: home glucose monitors, injection devices, and insulin pumps, to name a few. But since my diagnosis in 2003, I’d often wondered if any real patients were involved in the design of these medical devices...

The latest data from groundbreaking human clinical trials of the effectiveness of continuous glucose monitors (CGM) show that the primary determinant of improvements in achieving better diabetes control is regular use of monitors -- six days per week or more -- rather than the age of patients, and that benefits continue well past the time when people with type 1 diabetes begin using the devices -- including experiencing fewer low blood sugar emergencies.

The online diabetes community has dubbed today, July 1, a special day to lobby for insurance coverage of new continuous glucose monitoring systems. The idea is that we all raise our voices, by talking openly about how important CGMS is to our health, whether it’s simply for preventing lows at the gym or for dodging fatal heart attacks and strokes.
