Be True to Your (Diabetic) Heart

Last month I was invited, along with a handful of other online diabetes advocates, to visit the Dallas headquarters of the American Heart Association, the national nonprofit organization championing cardiac health. Of course were there to talk about heart disease – in particular, to brainstorm how to get millions of diabetics around the country to pay attention to their own elevated risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

Compliance versus Compassion

If you’ve been around diabetes for a while, you’ve surely heard the term “non-compliant.” This is the label that doctors, nurses and other health professionals have used for years to describe patients who don’t follow orders: don’t take medications as directed, don’t stick to meal plans, or generally fail to implement the prescribed treatment regimen.

Ask the Expert: Can a fasting blood sugar level of 170 to 216 be a normal range for a person?

Can a fasting blood sugar level of 170 to 216 be a normal range for a person or is that too high? I'm thinking way too high! But I’ve been adjusting my insulin (Lantus) by 2 cc's every 4 days. I started at 25 twice a day. It's now 32 twice a day. So I’m wondering if a range somewhat higher than what is considered normal be a good range for certain people?
