Pfizer warns of lung cancer with inhaled insulin

Pfizer Inc and Nektar Therapeutics said on Wednesday clinical trials of the inhaled insulin Exubera found increased cases of lung cancer, leading Nektar to stop seeking a marketing partner for the troubled product and abandon it.

Pfizer said on Wednesday it updated the product's labeling to include a warning with safety information about lung cancer cases found in patients who used Exubera, which U.S. regulators approved in January 2006.

Cheap Existing Drugs Combined to Lower Blood Pressure in Tests

CHICAGO Two big studies offer good news to people with high blood pressure, finding that novel ways to use cheap drugs already on the market can lower the risk of heart attacks, strokes and death even if they are very old.
Both studies were stopped early so the surprising benefits could be made known.

Success in Drug Trial With Cells From Pigs; DIABETES FILE

A KIWI-LED drug trial in Russia that features injecting human patients with pig cells has allowed one diabetic patient to go without daily insulin treatment for five months.

Diabetes Up 27%; in State Since 2005; Increase Reflects Nationwide Jump

Since 2005, the incidence of diabetes among adults in Wisconsin rose 27%, according to a report from the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services.
The report, titled "Burden of Diabetes in Wisconsin," said 419,870 adults had diabetes in the state in 2007.
In addition, about 1 million adults in Wisconsin have pre- diabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not enough to be considered diabetes.
