A researcher at the University of Central Florida says he has created a strain of lettuce that creates insulin.
Mike Beckman for the past 34 years has had to manage his Type 1 diabetes.
"It is with you every day," said Beckman.
He's had bleeding in his eyes, a heart attack, nerve damage and now, both of his kidneys are failing. It's also taking a toll on his family.

I agree. My body has already been through a lot with diabetes, and I don't know if I would be in a hurry to give up what is working for me as far as managing it to try something like this
This would be awesome! I would sign up for the test trials.
I read about this last year. Sadly it doesn't seem as if this has really progressed much since then. They talked about how it worked in mice and how the next step was human trials, seems that is pretty much the same story now. It also doesn't sound like a cure, more like a management technique.
Any kind of break thru is one in the right direction. That is what research is all about. This is incredibley promising, specially if it does retrain the body to work propperly. That would be fantastic. Human trials just around the corner…where do I sign up?
This is fantastic. I did not see this report in my hometown. I have type 2 diabetes, but I believe a breakthrough for type I can only help Type 2.
Thank God.
