ARA) - Adding grains, especially whole grains, to your diet provides many healthy benefits. Unfortunately, most Americans consume less than one-third of the daily recommended amount, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The good news is that now, more than ever, there are easy and delicious ways to add whole grains to your menus.

People who eat whole grains as part of a healthy diet have a reduced risk of coronary heart disease, largely because of the fiber they provide. Eating whole grains, like brown rice, may help regulate blood glucose levels in those with diabetes and studies also show people who consume more whole grains are better able to maintain a healthy weight.

My wife and I love to go to Panera and get their whole grain bagels. This is quite a treat, and helps to keep my weight in check. I was a Raisin Bran man for years, but since being diagnosed, I have switched to one bagel for breakfast, and the whole grain is better than most breads that I have enjoyed in my life.

I was raised on brown rice and still love it. I've been eating whole grain breads for quite some time. I love to bake and have been substituting 1/2 of white flour for wheat. I have found I need to add more moisture when I use the wheat. Fat Free sour cream works well. I too don't miss the white breads.

Barry, Thanks for adding this article. I'm a fan of brown rice anyway, and like the recipe idea they have there.

I am trying to find ways to add grains without adding bread or cereal. This article is a great source for ideas. It even has a great sounding recipe I will have to try.

I'm with you on that fact Liz, now I see just how flavorless "white" foods are also.

I thought it would be hard to give up white bread and white rice, but since changing to whole grain breads and whole grain pastas and rice,I don't miss the white breads or rice at all.Liz
