New guidelines stress the crucial role that physical activity plays in the management of Type 2 diabetes: physicians should prescribe exercise.

They replace recommendations made in the American College of Sports Medicine Position Stand, "Exercise and Type 2 Diabetes," issued in 2000.

Developed by a panel of 9 experts, the new guidelines are published concurrently in the December issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise and Diabetes Care.

"High-quality studies establishing the importance of exercise and fitness in diabetes were lacking until recently," the expert panel writes, "but it is now well established that participation in regular physical activity improves blood glucose control and can prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes mellitus, along with positively affecting lipids, blood pressure, cardiovascular events, mortality, and quality of life."

I'm a Lpn Nurse , my speciality is Diabetes I have had it 17 years and my identical Twin has had it 32 years. The single best excersize for diabetes is lifting weights, weather being with dumbells or bands, you burn calories as you build muscle, also try counting fat calories not total calories, you will see a big change, restrict your fat calories to under 500 calories a day to start

@ Rwane: Have you called around to yoga studios and ask if they teach a "seated yoga" class. Our apt complex has a lady come in twice a month to lead any of us who attend with gentle exercises. I would think that this might be a way to find gentle exercises to do. You may have some discomfort from the peripheral neuropathy. I do too (burning in my feet/calves) yet I choose to ignore it. I am taking dancing lessons (most recently Salsa).

I have so much fun I temporrily forget the neuropathy pain. I also have "balance challenges" and am fearful of falling, but dancing has helped me so much with the balance.

clj01- one of the best forms of exercise for people with diabetes is walking. Fortunately we don't need a gym for that. Any level of physical exercise that you are comfortable with can help with your diabetes care.

The need for exercise cannot be overstated but for some the ability to exercise in the manner shown on the video is not realistic. Some do not have the availability of a gym to go to on a regular basis. Others do not have the financial ability to avail themselves of a gym. Still others have health issues that limit their ability to do many effective forms of exercise. If we are to benefit we need to know about the alternative forms of exercise, even if somewhat less effective. The video was good and reinforced the need to exercise, but please add something that addresses those who are not able to go to a gym.

Great article - Personally speaking - hate exercise- hate it- hate it- hate it — but now with my condition I have excepted the fact that I could take control just by simply walking in the evenings did that for a while but now I’ve purchased me a bike and ride it 3-4 times a week- I enjoy that!! Thanks again

I've had my hips replaced and live in pain 24/7. I sure exercise is great for I use to be a marathon runner. However, with the pain it is so difficult to do any type of exercise. I guess I'm dealt what I'm dealt. When I first got dignosed they said I would get all the help I needed from my health care team. THERE WAS AND IS NO HELP!!! Everything I've learned up till now is from doing my own research. Do any of you have any suggestions to what I might be able to do for exercise?????

I have found for me excerise doesnt help at all…I was walking everday for at least a half hour thoughout the day. When I first started I got shin splints so have to be careful. So this 30 mins a day has not done a thing for my numbers nor has it helped me loose any weight whatsoever!!!!! Its frustrating!!!

From experience I can say that exercise really helps with the control of diabetes. This is a good article although I am not sure they recommend enough time per week. Other than that great article. PS I think 30 minutes per day or 210 minutes a week is best.
