The importance of the dilated eye exam was brought home to me when I developed swelling around the optic nerve, due to diabetes. I now have a blind spot in that eye. But if I had been receiving my eye exams I perhaps could have prevented it. But my eye doctor who specializes in problems with the retina took me immediately. Thank goodness there was no bleeding. I have been on every 6 month check ups since. I have recently progressed to once yearly exams again. Go every year before something happens!
