A new study shows encouraging confirmation that diabetes educators have a significant role in helping patients with diabetes manage their disease — and keep healthcare costs for the serious consequences of diabetes significantly lower.
The savings accrued not at the level of primary or preventive outpatient services, but in the realm of acute inpatient services. In the commercial group, for example, insurees with diabetes education actually had higher outpatient claims than those who had not received education. Their claims for acute inpatient services, however, were considerably lower, indicating that diabetes education had allowed them to avoid some of the disease's harsher outcomes.

Well this is great if you have insurance to pay so you can take the class. Some of us don't have an extra dollar to our name to pay for it and have no insurance. My doctor wanted me to go to the class but when he found I couldn't pay for it he never offered to help and has never mentioned t again.
Hi AvonLady,
I agree totally with you. The problem is, not many get proactive about trying to get this changed. There is a Diabetic Caucus formed by Congress. I had been fighting with Military Health care for suddenly denying my insulin pod supplies. I think I may have won it. I have a list of the Caucus members per State if you are interested in voicing your opinion and demanding change.\

This would be great for diabetics and other people who have to go to the dr. every three months and take these high priced medications and insulin! My husband's workplace gave them thier insurance packets and the co-pays doubled and I just about went ballistic! I would've been ok with it if it went up only by $5.00's, but that wasn't the case for 2010. It's rediculous what a person is going to have to pay for healthcare in the future! We need our medical insurance coverage to be lower and that goes for our medicines too!
