We have arranged for Jessica Gibbons, a Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian, to field some of your most important questions. Jessica has over a decade of experience teaching people with diabetes about nutrition, exercise, medication management, carbohydrate counting, and the latest in diabetes management technology.
We recognize the tremendous good that has been done here as members have come together to share all that we’ve learned and to support each other. However, we also recognize that there are times that we really need an expert to weigh in and teach us all.
Submit your questions below for Jessica. We hope to make this a permanent feature of the site. For now, we're testing the idea. Please note that Jessica may not be able to answer all of the questions submitted in this first round. We’ll do our best to get as many answered as we can. Thank you for your understanding.
(Important note: Any answer provided does not constitute medical advice or recommendation. If you are having a medical emergency, you should seek immediate professional care. You should not rely on any answers provided on this website to replace consultations with your doctor.)

May 9, 2009 5:12 PM I AM A TYPE 2 DIABETIC. MY KIDNEY FUNCTION WAS NOT VERY GOOD, SO THE DOCTOR TOOK ME OFF OF THE 70/30 INSULIN AND METFORMIN. SHE PUT ME ON LEVEMIRE AND NOVOLOG. THE LEVEMIRE GIVES ME A PRETTY BAD RASH AT THE INJECTION SITE AND DOESN'T SEEM TO BE WORKING. FOR THE PAST FEW DAYS I HAVE NOT TAKEN THE LEVEMIRE, ONLY THE NOVOLOG. IT HAS NOT CHANGED MY SUGAR READING AT ALL. I EAT MOSTLY SALADS, WITH A SANDWICH THROWN IN ONCE IN A WHILE. I DO COOK HEALTHY FOODS WITH MEATS AND CHEESES AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK. IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULD BE CHANGING IN MY DIET. (I DO KNOW HOW TO COUNT CARBS BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN SEEING A DIETICIAN.) THE DOCTOR HAS ME TAKING 50 UNITS OF NOVOLOG AT LUNCH AND DINNER (I DON'T EAT BREAKFAST, SO SHE TOLD ME TO STOP TAKING THE NOVOLOG IN THE MORNINGS.) SHE ALSO WANTS ME TO TAKE 120 UNITS OF LEVEMIRE IN THE MORNING AND AT BEDTIME. (THAT IS NOT WORKING AT ALL.) I PLAN ON CALLING THE DOCTOR MONDAY ABOUT MY NOT TAKING THE LEVEMIRE, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANYTHING I SHOULD CHANGE IN MY DIET. |
