Ask the Diabetes Expert

May 07, 2009

By John Crowley

We have arranged for Jessica Gibbons, a Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian, to field some of your most important questions. Jessica has over a decade of experience teaching people with diabetes about nutrition, exercise, medication management, carbohydrate counting, and the latest in diabetes management technology.

We recognize the tremendous good that has been done here as members have come together to share all that we’ve learned and to support each other. However, we also recognize that there are times that we really need an expert to weigh in and teach us all.

Submit your questions below for Jessica. We hope to make this a permanent feature of the site. For now, we're testing the idea. Please note that Jessica may not be able to answer all of the questions submitted in this first round. We’ll do our best to get as many answered as we can. Thank you for your understanding.

(Important note: Any answer provided does not constitute medical advice or recommendation. If you are having a medical emergency, you should seek immediate professional care. You should not rely on any answers provided on this website to replace consultations with your doctor.)

I am 54 and have been diagnosed as type one diabetic since November of 2008. My Blood Sugar levels are between 79 and 158. I only manage my Blood Sugar through diet and exercise. What is the numbers that I am suppose to be, between and can I always go without the use of insulin.

Hi Jessica,
I have been a Type I diabetic for over 47 years. I am very physically active, most of my activity being done early mornings or late afternoons because of the Arizona sun. When I return inside and check my blood, I will either be right on target or way high. If it is high, I correct for it, but in the early morning hours when I am in bed it will drop drastically, even if it was perfect before bedtime. I have tried all different things, but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions? All my endocrinologist would say is to get rid of the horses and do the same activity every day...which isn't going to happen.
Thanks, Roberta
