Ask the Diabetes Expert

May 07, 2009

By John Crowley

We have arranged for Jessica Gibbons, a Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian, to field some of your most important questions. Jessica has over a decade of experience teaching people with diabetes about nutrition, exercise, medication management, carbohydrate counting, and the latest in diabetes management technology.

We recognize the tremendous good that has been done here as members have come together to share all that we’ve learned and to support each other. However, we also recognize that there are times that we really need an expert to weigh in and teach us all.

Submit your questions below for Jessica. We hope to make this a permanent feature of the site. For now, we're testing the idea. Please note that Jessica may not be able to answer all of the questions submitted in this first round. We’ll do our best to get as many answered as we can. Thank you for your understanding.

(Important note: Any answer provided does not constitute medical advice or recommendation. If you are having a medical emergency, you should seek immediate professional care. You should not rely on any answers provided on this website to replace consultations with your doctor.)

Hi Jessica,
My son was diagnoised last month with Type II. He 27yr.old, 6'3" and 230 lbslbs. He hasn't been able to see dietician yet(they can't get him in till end of next month). They found out he had Type II, when he had emergency surgery for his Gall Bladder. The surgeon and MD put him on 2,000 calorie diet. But no input on how many carbs, fats, or meats(oz.) per day, he should consume! Any advise or help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Cyndi

I think this is a great idea and here is a question for her.

I am a type 2 Diabetic and have a very hard time coming up with meal plans that I can stick with. I would rather use the Calorie Diet but they have gone to Carbs. Can you help me with a 1800 calorie plan and a 1600 calorie plan that I can use to help me lose weight?
