Ask the Diabetes Expert

May 07, 2009

By John Crowley

We have arranged for Jessica Gibbons, a Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian, to field some of your most important questions. Jessica has over a decade of experience teaching people with diabetes about nutrition, exercise, medication management, carbohydrate counting, and the latest in diabetes management technology.

We recognize the tremendous good that has been done here as members have come together to share all that we’ve learned and to support each other. However, we also recognize that there are times that we really need an expert to weigh in and teach us all.

Submit your questions below for Jessica. We hope to make this a permanent feature of the site. For now, we're testing the idea. Please note that Jessica may not be able to answer all of the questions submitted in this first round. We’ll do our best to get as many answered as we can. Thank you for your understanding.

(Important note: Any answer provided does not constitute medical advice or recommendation. If you are having a medical emergency, you should seek immediate professional care. You should not rely on any answers provided on this website to replace consultations with your doctor.)

If I eat/drink nothing but sugar-free items that have no nutritional value my diabetes stabilizes to almost no insulin. If I eat/drink anything else, it goes over 200 and I need 10 units of Novolog. Why is it no nutritionally sound food is tolerated yet sugar-free food/drink almost eliminate insulin for me, a type II diabetic?
