Ask the Diabetes Expert

May 07, 2009

By John Crowley

We have arranged for Jessica Gibbons, a Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian, to field some of your most important questions. Jessica has over a decade of experience teaching people with diabetes about nutrition, exercise, medication management, carbohydrate counting, and the latest in diabetes management technology.

We recognize the tremendous good that has been done here as members have come together to share all that we’ve learned and to support each other. However, we also recognize that there are times that we really need an expert to weigh in and teach us all.

Submit your questions below for Jessica. We hope to make this a permanent feature of the site. For now, we're testing the idea. Please note that Jessica may not be able to answer all of the questions submitted in this first round. We’ll do our best to get as many answered as we can. Thank you for your understanding.

(Important note: Any answer provided does not constitute medical advice or recommendation. If you are having a medical emergency, you should seek immediate professional care. You should not rely on any answers provided on this website to replace consultations with your doctor.)

Hi, and thanks for presenting this feature. :)

I have been recently diagnosed as a Type II diabetic and am having difficulty in developing a good meal plan -- how often to eat during the day, how much at each meal, how many grams (not ounces) of protein each meal/day, how many carbs, etc., etc. & the balance amongst protein, carbs & fat. I keep getting conflicting advice (all from "experts") & meals are getting really dull (bad thing for an Italian who loves to cook & bake).

I am a long-time vegetarian (who doesn't eat mushrooms, avocados or lentils), so varied protein sources are a little tougher to incorporate (especially out of the home -- which is often, since I travel a lot for business & leisure).

Any suggestions? I do eat dairy, but nothing that has a face or babies. ;)

Jessica, I'm type 1, after eatting breakfast or any meal it can take several hours before my sugar level to go below 150. Ex: I ate breakfast at 9 am at 1 pm my sugar was at 225. I'm on glucophage 200mg in morn. I've cut my portions, I do have problems excersizing due to a really bad case of COPD, I try to get my heart rate up then I am unable to get enough air. What do health officials, etc suggest to help me? Any advice would help. Thank You.
