I know many of us are watching our carbs, cutting our fat intake and clearing the salt off the tables. But do you really know what you are eating? I thought I did, but I got a list yesterday that just blew my mind.

GMO (genetically modified organisms), GM (genetically modified) and GH (growth hormones) are the three hidden elements of your food that are causing many of the elevated rates of immune disorders, cancers and even things like diabetes.

Here is a link to the PDF shopping guide that you can take with you to check your ingredients, but I will give you a partial list of things to watch for in your foods. Most of the ones I am going to list are ones that are found in diabetic type foods. Many of these things I found in my pantry. It is so disturbing. So get out those labels and read them closely.

This list is for non-organic foods. So if you see these items in a certified organic product you will be doing yourself a favor. However, chances are, some of these will never be in organic foods.

Aspartame
baking soda
canola oil (rapeseed)
citric acid
corn flour (anything having to do with corn at all)
dextrin
dextrose
erythritol
food starch
fructose (any form)
gluten
HFCS (high fructose corn syrup…that is in almost every processed food)
hydorgenated starch
inositol
invert sugar
inversol
lactic acid
lysine
malitol
maltodextrin
mannitol
modified food starch
MSG (monosodium glucomate)
sorbitol
soy flour
soy milk
soy oil
sugar (unless cane sugar)
tofu (unless organic)
vegetable oil (because of cotton seed oil)
Vitamin B12
Vitamin E
whey
xanthan gum

The list is much longer, but these are ones I have been finding in foods that I thought were safe for us to use. Truvia, Stevia in the Raw have these things in them. I am just so frustrated about this.

The basic 4 things to avoid in any form unless they are 100% organic are:
Corn (this is our most GMO crop in the US) or any corn based products and there are hundreds
Soy (this is also a GMO crop here in the US)
Canola Oil (also called rapeseed oil)
Cottonseed Oil (this is a major component in our vegetable oils)

Also a GM sugar beet has taken over the cane sugar industry. Beets have been genetically modified to be sweeter to get the sugar. This is also the sugar source for sweeteners like Splenda. So beware.
