Live and Active

Gabby

I have been on a quest to find yogurt with LIVE and ACTIVE cultures in it for my hubby who has just been inundated with anti-biotics. The doctor and pharmacist both told me it had to have both LIVE and ACTIVE to give him his good bacteria back in his body. I started reading on this subject and found that our bodies need 85% of the good bacteria in our bodies and eating processed foods kill most of those little guys.

Well the only two I found was a Greek yogurt by Chobani and Bryers Yo Crunch. Yep, not the Activia or the Danactive have both live and active. Hmmm, marketing ploys abound.
Here is where it gets interesting.

6oz of Yo Crunch Bryers yogurt has 33g of carbs and 180 calories
4oz of Yo Crunch with Truvia has 20g of carbs and 100 calories

But…6oz of the Greek yogurt has 20g of carbs and 140 calories with 0 from fat! Wow was that a surprise.

So as things always go, the best for us is the most expensive. But I was happy to see a sugar free product made with Truvia instead of Splenda. That was encouraging. But what surprised me more was that out of all the yogurts on the market, even the "digestive" helping ones. Only two were LIVE and ACTIVE cultures.

We have Aldi's here in Florida too. We use it for some things, but you have to watch the water content of the canned goods. We found they sold more water than product in there. Other than that, there are some great deals to be had there.

I love chobani, first off .. it's a great company that is active on facebook too. I love the taste and consistancy of the products. Greek yogurt has double the protein than regular yogurt. I do a lot with the plain chobani yogurt, add fresh blueberries, or other fruits myself. I use it to top a sweet potato w/ cinnamon. A dollop on top of fresh cooked greens. The plus side to chobani outweighs the increased price in my eyes.

I used to have my grandmothers yogurt maker but it got lost in a military move. I still occasionally make homemade yogurt and have found that it's real easy to if you dont have the machine, make it just by using your oven light to keep it at the low level warmth. Here is a link that demonstrates the same method I use. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/4597...

You can make it Greek style simply by straining it of some whey in cheese cloth over a dish afterwards.

I save the whey and used it in smoothies and homemade ricotta.

This is great. But now after reading the below link, since this is heated before put in the oven, that kills the cultures. So is there a way to do it in true fermentation style at home?

My mom used to make her own yogurts way back in the 70's. I don't know if you could find that kitchen gadget anymore. Hers was a lot more like the greek yogurt, not as sweet with fruit on the bottom. Very thick. I might have to give that a try. I could really freak the FDA out and use raw milk with my organic fruits. LOL

The thing I read about the live and active cultures is that as soon as they are exposed to air, they die. I am still trying to figure that oxymoron out. So I don't see how the pills work at all, as they are dried up?? I don't know how they work in yogurt either unless they become live in the process. It is one of those perplexing things in life. Pills were mentioned by the doctor, but he said yogurts would do better.

They have actually done great for him so far. He is almost back to normal already and he has been eating 2-3 a day. The doctor told him to eat 4 a day for a week. So for him 2-3 is great! He likes it, but just not a real good eater.

Isn't it interesting how the mom's and grandmothers had it figured out! My grandmother made everything from scratch within reason. I remember she made a homemade "Pimento Cheese" that you had to fight to keep in the refrigerator.

Have you seen this…Active and live cultures are talked about here: http://aboutyogurt.com/index.asp?bid=28

Is there a way to make your own? What about the vitamin supplements that offer those live and active cultures??? I have seen them but can't recall the brands off hand. Yes, those marketing departments make a lot of money covering up yucky things with healthy names.
