I was diagnosed last year with an A1C of 14.1 and fasting blood sugar 366. I changed my diet and one year later my blood sugar is almost normal most days. My last A1C was 5.4 back in January. Wow, that's wonderful. I have taken a similar approach but I don't have as much willpower as you. I have totally changed my eating habits since I was diagnosed. My last A1C was 5.4 which I was thrilled about…but the only thing that I am not happy with is I have a lot of low readings (50-60).

At my last appointment my doctor said I could try to go of my meds but I opted to cut them in half first. Now I am taking 250mg of Metformin twice a day. If I do okay with that for a few months I will definitely stop taking it.

How much do you exercise? That is where I have the biggest problem staying consistant.

I stopped taking meds about 7 weeks after starting them. For the last couple of weeks I cut the pills in half and took 250mg of Metformin both morning and night. I started to get severe muscle cramps in the back of my legs. I didn’t know what pills were responsible, so I temporary stopped taking them all. My blood sugar continued to get better week after week. I took my blood pressure 3 times a day and it stayed real good even without the meds. I purchased a cholesterol meter and my cholesterol has stayed in the normal range. At my next doctors appointment he agreed and said I didn’t needs meds anymore.

If you stop taking your meds and your blood sugar starts to get worse instead of better you can always start taking them again. I believe it’s worth a try. You must have a good doctor. Most would argue against going off meds. At least my doctor did until he seen my numbers. Can’t argue much if your numbers are good.

Exercise I don’t really do. I walk from my car to my classroom every day. If I walk slowly it takes about 10 min. Most days it’s a little less. Then at the end of the day I must walk back to my car. Last summer I try to exercise a little and it lasted about 2 weeks. I had been thinking about starting the hobby of Geocaching in a few weeks or so. Will have to wait and see what happens.

My advice to you is this, document your progress, keep doing what your doctor recommends and eat properly and smartly.
If things aren't that bad, you can get off your meds but it will take serious work and commitment. Ask your doctor if it's at all possible that it can happen in the future, then take it from there !

Hello, I have been a type 1 for 22 years and I wish you luck in getting off your meds. I know it is hard but don't give up. Please take care of yourself because I suffer from many complications of diabetes and it can be prevented. Good luck to you!

Hello, i had type 2 for 10 years this aug. I am not afraid of the medication since i grew up with my Mom and Sister who have type 1 for 30 plus years. its sad that many Hispanics and African Americans have a large number of people who may have diabetes and not know it.
