I know this is a diabetic website, but I also know we also like to read things other than diabetic books. =) So I was wondering what books are everyone reading? If you're not reading anything at the moment, what is one of your favorite books?
I myself, just finished reading "The Lovely Bones" and I am just starting "Gone with the Wind".

The ABC's of Loving Yourself With Diabetes by Riva
Greenberg.
This is not the usual material found in books about Diabetes. It offers a different view. It self motivates,
Its about people with Diabetes and the challenges, and ways to cope and come out stronger. I would recommend it to everyone. -

Hi,
I'm a person that likes to read Stephen King and then I love to read cookbooks of all kinds. They (the cookbooks) give me ideas to make something new and my own creation. Sometimes they taste good and sometimes not. You know I think I'll get Gone With The Wind and read it again. I really liked that book. John Jakes is also a good author, I just finished reading the Kent Family Chronicles again about 2 months ago. I also enjoy re-reading all of Jules Verne's books. I think I have read them at least 4 times in the last 15-20 years. James Patterson is also a good author. I vary on the type of reading I do and it's time for a change so I think Gone With The Wind will be a good change.
I gotta go now. I will check back again soon.
Have a nice weekend everyone.
Hugs,
Helene -

I saw the movie, it was pretty good. I would like to read the book, to see how the writer lays it out.

Oooooh! Good book. I read it about two years ago, then again just before I went to see the movie. I loved both (but the book better.)

I recently read 'The Help", do not remember the author's name. Very, very good!. I've recommended it to all my female friends/relatives. It's probably a woman's book, not a romantic novel, but all the characters are women. I think men would benefit from reading this, but they probably couldn't get through it. It's set in the 60's in the South, during the civil rights movement.

This subject seems to be a success. Sometimes I like an hour or two when I don't have to think about what's wrong with me, or count carbs, or think about anything. That's what has fueled my extensive reading through the years. (The first book I got at the public library, age 9, was about the discovery of insulin. Ironic, huh?)
And this subject on this board seems to have gotten everyone involved, and I can see layers of everyone's personality. Good topic!

I have to admit, My guilty pleasure is V.C.Andrews. I have been reading her books for years and I own pretty much all of them. I don't know what it is about all her twisted novels, but I love them. Makes me feel like my family is just a tad bit on the sane side. =)

That's why I like those non-fiction books, I realize that I could be alot worse off or that I have a pretty good family compared to those that I read about. I'm all about the psychology books.

-

You are not weird. I enjoy a little Stephen King myself. My favorite would have to be his short stories in "Different Seasons"
-
Danni-the-diabetic February 9, 2010 at 11:17 pm0 Likes
You're not weird at all Alan, Stephen King is a great writer. My mom has a Stephen King collection and every once in awhile I will snatch one of his books and mix it in with my Dean Koontz readings. When we would take trips back home to NY, which was a 18 hour drive for us, we would listen to an audio book of his, it always made the ride more enjoyable and it went by alot faster.

I read King all the time. I recently finished "Under the Dome" too. It leaves me with some of the feelings I got from reading "The Stand" many years ago. I also read Dean Koontz often. I'm currently reading Stephen Coonts' "Deep Black: Sea of Terror" and just finished William Dietrich's "The Dakota Cipher". Basically, I read a lot - anything and everything.

I like Robert Parker, Nora Roberts, Clive Cussler, and the Scarpetta books by Patricia Cornwell. I enjoy mysteries, crime dramas, and thrillers the best with romance for light reading on the beach, or on vacation.
Gone with the Wind and Little Women were two of my favorite books.

Kira - I so enjoyed "The Lovely Bones." Strange and wonderful and wrenching. Not sure I want to see the movie, though. The book was so moving and I've heard mixed reviews about the on-screen version.
What did you think of it?
-
Kira_xo February 9, 2010 at 8:43 pm0 Likes
I enjoyed the book. I did feel a bit let down with the ending tho. I was secretly hoping the father was going to track down the killer and get him! But over all I did enjoy the book. I do want to see the movie because I always like comparing the books to the movies. Even if they are completely different from each other!

I received a book for Christmas, a biography of Paul Newman. My family teases me all the time about how much of a Paul Newman fan I am. I haven't really started it yet, just sit and look at the picture of him on the dust jacket (amaing). And I've ruffled through the book and found pictures I can look at.
-

My first impulse is to say "food labels" — LOL! But as everyone else is being kind enough to share their personal literary choices, I shall play nice as well.
As fiction is concerned, I generally read Diana Gabaldon and will soon start her latest in the "Outlander" series "An Echo in the Bone" (I felt compelled to read the entire series again prior to starting this one). Occasionally, I will revert to classics such as stuff by Austen, the Brontes, Hawthorne and Hardy.
As non-fiction goes, I will read pretty much anything…I like DIY books/magazines, as well as things to do with lists…in the vein of a Peoples Almanac, etc. I love the written word and indulge in it at every opportunity, no matter the form!

Oh, my. It's such a temptation to plug my own books here. But the rules say I'm not supposed to use this site for commercial purposes. When I find the time to read fiction, I prefer something with a lot of action. W.E.B. Griffin, Robert B. Parker, Clive Cussler, … that kind of thing.

Yeah, since retiring from my 'real job', it's about all I do. I have 3 books published and currently for sale on Amazon.com and a fourth book completed but I'm still searching for an artist to do the cover. All the books are part of a science fiction series called Star Tricks. It started as a spoof of Star Trek but it's taken on a life of it's own and the characters seem to be writing the story themselves.I'm sometimes surprised what happens when I sit down to write.

I'd be happy to. The primary character who is telling the story formerly wrote instruction manuals for BBQ grills. Then he got caught up in interstellar intrigue..

I moved to AZ to get away from cold weather. Strangely, I don't mind the heat. Those -20 degree winters were very difficult for my weakened heart and my cardiologist ordered me not to even OWN a snow shovel. My brother had moved to the Phoenix area several years ago for a job so I just followed his lead.
