Insulin

I have to admit up front…I have not been taking care of my diabetes. I recently had surgery and quickly was told I better get it under control.

I have watched my diet and taken meds. Even tried taking meds one at a time to try to get rid of headaches, tiredness, nausea and shakes. Nothing has worked. I am so tired of taking meds all the time and not having a pepsi (lol) feeling sick and still having 190 average readings.

Is asking for insulin an option that might help?

You are a type two. Most Dr. will give you a chance with exercise and tight diet control before they even consider
oral meds. If nothing else works they go to insulin and
advanced carb counting. Its better if you can do it on your own. Once you are on meds its usually a progression.

I completely understand…I have had diabetes for 10 yrs…I took meds for a time…lost job and insurance…did not take for a long time…even in the hospital (surgery recently) taking 2 oral meds…they still gave me insulin on a sliding scale. They monitored my meals there..and I have been very good at home as well. I really cannot exercise at this time..but I will when I am healed. I guess I would like an easy was out of this…but, I know it is not going to happen…I am just looking for some advice on what to do to stop feeling so badly.

You have to occupy your mind with other thoughts and activities, easier said than done being said from an outsider looking in, but it may help !

That's never made sense to me. For instance, when you are learning to ride a bike you don't get put on a crotch rocket motorbike and told to go ride it. First you get put on a little bike with training wheels, then when you have the general idea the training wheels come off and you practice without then you move up to bigger bikes and then (if you want) to small motorbikes and then so on. I don't see why diabetes should be any different, it's a huge learning process. Take all the help you can get at the start and ease into things. Medications can easily be dropped once you understand the disease and how it works for you if you can manage with diet and exercise alone but making potentially massive changes immediately without knowing much about anything can be a recipe for disaster and depression.

YES insulin is a reasonable request.

I have been reading lately on other sites and general health info that even recently diagnosed diabetics are now sometimes being put on insulin from the beginning. I think the thought process is that its better to have low blood sugars to prevent complications and insulin is the 2nd best way to accomplish that…with diet and exercise being first.

I would say ask..the worst thing your doctor can say is no, in case you are in the same situation you are in now. Who knows they could also say yes and it make a world of difference to your management.

    Give it time !
A little time and dedication and you will see improvement, right now you are going through what every one has and will go through, impatience !
Why not spend some time doing a little research into diabetes, it's causes, diets and exercise, you need to deal with the impatience, make it work for you !

There is no easy way out concerning diabetes,
work (sometimes hard) dedication, education of diabetes, following a plan and maintaining your glucose levels are what's required along with your doctors recommendations are requirements to obtain good health.
Only you can do this, no one can do it for you !

I know the feeling very well, it's tough.
It's hard at first because so many emotions are involved most of them negative but you have to be stronger than those thoughts, you have to stay active both physically and mentally.
Our first thoughts are to do everything all at once, it doesn't and cannot work that way.
Don't ever give up, you can do it, everyone here will tell you the same thing, YOU CAN DO IT, JUST TRY !

Awhile back I was having the same issues you are…I was tired all the time, not just physically but emotionally as well. I never felt like getting out of bed, and when I did, I didn't want to do anything but sit.

I had gotten off of insulin and went to metformin. It was physically making my stomach ill. My doctor had warned me that the meds mite make my tummy soar, but no meds have ever done that to me before, so I figured it wouldn't happen now. I was wrong.

I quickly found out that metformin did not regulate my sugars nearly as well as my insulin did, so I had to watch my already strict diet, that much closer.

I was just tired. I finally went back to my doctor and asked to be back on my Lantus. She told me that in her practice that it's actually more common than you think. A lot of people get off of insulin and then realize it's not really what they wanted.

I am now back on my Lantus shots once a day, the tiredness is gone, and I like getting out of bed again.

I don't know if this will be the same for you or not, but I wish you luck any way it works out!!!

Thanks everyone…I know i am getting depressed. I do not want to but I am trying so hard to do the right thing and I felt better when I was being bad.

I am a person that cannot stand to stay in the house..now, i do not even want to take the dog out…I am so shaky…I feel like I am going to pass out. I feel horrible. I guess I was looking for a quick fix…I really feel like just going back to my old ways.

I appreciate all the support!! It is nice to know someone cares and understands.

Are you testing when you feel shaky? That's one of the signs of low sugar levels.

I felt that way every day too…I got off the levimer..(same as lantis) and I feel great now. Im not tired and my body dosent hurt. The Doctor put me on Byetta and Metforman ER. I have to be very carefull what I eat and very low carb…but Im loosing weight and my BS are great. And I feel great. But everyone is different and everyone reacts to meds different. But if your BS is low and you eat like crazy to get feeling better…it will make you feel worse.

Yes it is an option. First you should try to get your diet in control, watch your carb intake and portion size. Exercise as much as you are able to Work with your Drs. and see how the oral meds work. There are many with different combinations, and it takes time and adjustments to get your levels where they should be. Pills are for sure a lot easier to take, but sometimes, insulin is the answer. Work with your Dr. on this, and welcome to the site, and good luck.

You are not whining! When you need to whine..go to Piss n Moan #3 (currently) Anything goes there.lol. You might be suffering a bit of depression. I am no Dr. or expert, but many on this site have experience with these feelings and can better help you than me. We all have our bad days, just pick yourself back up and start again, and don't beat yourself up.
