Things on the Site that Are Broken

I've created this as the spot for you to report "bugs" you find in the site. Is there a button that's not working? Something that crashed the site? Or something that just confuses you about the site?

Let us know and we'll get our tech team on the problem right away.

Thanks for your help.

Products have to have a few ratings before they will show up as a top rated product.

I take that back. It does remove, but not while you are doing it. It shows that it was removed when you go back or refresh.

That last comment was a Thanks to TRKnight (can't see the rest, the Add your Reply box is in a static position.

Either way, if you are replying to a reply within a discussion, possible move the reply box over to the right a bit, that way you can see the "trail" of replies.

TRKnight2007 replied March 13, 2008 7:56 AM

Completely agree CALpumper. We had a solution last night, but yanked it because it wasn't elegant. We need to add this piece back in so we can have some dialogue back-and-forth in a discussion.

Yes we need a way to edit our posts. I also suggest having a spell check added. Sorry, but some people do not use Word before posting and it drives me nuts reading their poor writing skills. I want to correct them, but that would be rude.

LOL. And once again I can't edit my previously misspelled comment. NyxWulf will be laughing all weekend at this over-sight.

CALpumper replied March 13, 2008 8:52 AM

Humor is the best medicine and this is a beta site so no worries TRKnight2007!! Ha ha!
This is why we test....hard part is thinking of how users might "break" it and preparing for that!

Just added a bunch of photos. Since this brought the View Photos section to Page 2 I was able to see how it looks.

The 2 | Next >> box moved down and in front of the first picture. Need a break after that box?

Speaking of breaks, all comments and replies do not account for paragraph breaks. It reads as all on paragraph. Able to allow
within maybe??

CALpumper replied March 13, 2008 8:53 AM

And look at that, there it is!! HA HA

Ok, where did I notice it!? Comment for photos was one place. Comment to Article/Headline. Checking. Oops, good to see it here. My bad.

When I did my profile, it asked me for my health conditions as a caregiver. I could not find a button to save changes, and there was nothing for people with no health issues. I eventually figured out that I can click to a different tab and save changes there, but it would be nice to have a button at the bottom of each page. This is on the EDIT tab, not the original sign up.

Reviewing My Rating Tab:

Invite a Friend: Shows I have 0 points. I have clicked on Invite to Friends a bunch of times. Does this reset for some reason? Or is it simply not working?

Share News, Article, Recipe, Video, or Book: Shows I have 0 points. I have added two Articles and two Recipes....(also the main menu on the left reads News & Articles, so this section in ratings should read the same as elsewhere that is how it is written, with an &)

Comment on a Friend's Photo: Shows I have 0 points. I have added comments to some of Amy's photo's, I think two.

Receive a Comment on Content You've Contributed: Which content counts? Articles/News, Discussions, Recipes?

You have been so great in your thoroughness helping us identify things that we need to fix. Thanks. We'll check into the issues with your rating. It is working for some. That's so strange that you're not getting points. We'll see what we can find.

CALpumper replied March 14, 2008 11:56 AM

Thanks John and you are very welcome.

I saw that you replied before I logged in and clicked on Reply to this Reply. It went to the log in screen, great, but once I was logged in the screen is um, odd.

It looks like the "code/browser preview" that software like DreamWeaver shows.

It did not come up as a pop up but a full browser window.

The fonts are not the same, the Anonymous radio button is not "tabbed" over and the button pictures (ADD YOUR REPLY and CANCEL) at the bottom look out of place.

Hope that description helps!?

John, I see the difference in the Ratings now....

Contribute and Share News, Articles, etc etc.
But what is the difference? Share as in send to a friend, correct?

Also, if you have a Add your Reply pop up and click on the window where you were, the pop up disappears and you have to click on Add your reply at the top again. Was that meant to be or can you adjust (only because some users will start a reply and forget what they are seeing or referencing....or it is just me ha ha.)

TBOzarka1 replied March 14, 2008 1:31 PM

I am sure you are overwhelmed with fixes right now, and this one is nothing serious, but when viewing an uploaded video there is no option for full screen. You can zoom in by right clicking on the video, but once you do that you can never return to the size it was. Of course this can be solved by left clicking and going directly to the Youtube site.

TRKnight2007 replied March 14, 2008 3:57 PM

Jon, thanks for the feedback. I'll check with our tech team to see if this can be done. Soon we will be integrating all Flash video players across the web so you can grab nearly any video and link to it. I think that will be really cool, since no one else is doing that. Thanks again.

I wanted to review a book, a publication of NIH / CDC. Helping the Student With Diabetes.

It is an outstanding book and your first copy is free courtesy of the tax payers.

But I can't enter a title that isn't already in the database. What up with that? Only book you know about already get reviews?

To me that a near fatal error for the site as a whole. It smacks big time of censorship, If I can't ad a publication then I not a member I am a recipient of marketing.

John Crowley replied March 16, 2008 7:52 PM

The engine we are using for the book reviews does have a prepopulated database. However, we are certainly not in the business of censoring books that can be helpful to diabetics. I will check into the functionality of adding a new book. Thank you so much for your honest feedback.

TRKnight2007 replied March 16, 2008 10:33 PM

BadShoe - Just to explain further how our Book database works . . . we are tied into Amazon.com. All the books that you can currently add can only be from Amazon.com. However, you just brought up a really cool idea that, quite frankly, we had not thought of. I love the idea that we could expand beyond Amazon and allow anyone to upload a picture - - especially for books that have a hard time getting distribution. We've actually run into several authors in the past few weeks that would love a system like this where they could GIVE AWAY their book on our site in .pdf format. Thanks for bringing this to light . . . I actually think it's a great idea and something we can work on for the Community in the coming weeks.

When I do a product search (in the product reviews) that returns mutlitple pages, if I click on page 2 or I click on Next, it brings me back to the first page. It does not go to the next page. (I tried the search with meter and with needle and got the same result). If I click on page 3 or page 4, it still only goes back to the first page and does not bring up the following pages.

AaronS replied March 19, 2008 7:24 PM

Just to add to this problem of only being able to see the first page on a search, this problem occurs both on a computer running IE6 and on one running IE7.

TRKnight2007 replied March 19, 2008 7:33 PM

Aaron - So you aren't able to navigate past the first page on when you search for Friends? Let me know the areas you experienced this. Should be an easy fix. Thanks.

AaronS replied March 20, 2008 6:35 AM

No, not in searh for friends. This only happens (so far) in the product review if I enter a search criteia - say "meter". It shows that there are four pages of meter results but the only page I can access is the first one. The same thing happened when I enterd needles. On the other hand, if I do not enter a search criteria, I can access all the pages.

In the product reviews, would it be possible to add a comments box as well as the pros and cons box. For some of the products, I would like to make some comments on them that are neither pros nor cons.

TRKnight2007 replied March 19, 2008 7:10 AM

Aaron - Thanks for the feedback. We'll be happy to add in the functionality. I'm also thinking that we'll add in pictures as well. It probably won't be that impressive for some categories, but it may work with others . . . like meters.

In the Book Club section, on the top rated, most recent and most discussed tabs, would it be possible to list the number of reviews with the list rather than having to click on each book to see how many reviews there are.

Also, could you add a tab for Recommend a book. Everything else has tabs, so I keep looking for a tab for this (rather than at the menu on the left).

When you do recommend a book, could you show what is going to be placed in the Description of the book before the recommendation is made. (For example, if the book does not have an online description, I might want to add that in the comments.

just a few accessibility issues:

1- I could not find a skip to content link or method. Is there one here that I'm missing?

2- the discussion 'nuggets' on the home page throw an error when checked with accessibility software. No alt tags are included.

Above are both priority 1 items. I found a few priority 2 issues but they are relatively minor.

I also think that grey on grey text/background is a problem for anyone who has vision issues. Not enough contrast.

Nicely done on the script/noscript reply setup!

not sure if this has been mentioned yet but when a user registers and decides not to enter a state, they get "Alabama" as their state. I think the state list should begin with "Select State".

Also, adding a "Select State" option is good for accessibility b/c once someone using a screen reader enters a list of choices, if they decide not to select an item, they can't always use their keyboard to get out of the list without selecting something - sighted users would just click somewhere else.

This one is really odd. In the discussions, there's a post "New Member" by Sherrie206. When I tried to read it earlier today, all I would see was a blank page (IE6 brower). Also, interestingly when I went to the member's profile page first then clicked on the post, it would appear for about two seconds then disappear.

When I looked at it tonight, I could see the post. However, all the replies ran over the boundry of the page and appeared partially over the grey background. (IE7 browser).

In both cases, as far as I could tell, this was the only discussion item that appeared (or didn't appear) in this manner.

AaronS replied June 20, 2008 3:04 PM

If I try to scroll the page down, the comment box just jerks up and down several times and still doesn't show the buttons.Even though I am at the top of a discussion page I just cannot scroll down. My only solution so far is to click on the top browser bar and scoot it up as far as I can, then go to the bottom of the page and pull the corner down. Then I can find the buttons. :-( ??

Is there anyway to make your browser window larger? Or are you restricted by your monitor size?

This is reply to Elfin so that she can see everything on her monitgor. Go to the bar on top of your computer and click on "view" go down the menu and click on "size" then click on either "small" "smaller" or "smallest". I just changed my computer and with this one the only way I can reply to anything is if I chose "smallest".

Would it be posssible to add a spot under the discussions for a support discussion board. This would be were people could talk and ask questions about family members who are having trouble like out of control sugar levels, illness etc. it would give these family and friends a place to talk to each other. Kind of like a support group.

John Crowley replied September 5, 2008 9:20 AM

So this may or may not be the problem. But you have to be friends with someone in order to send them a personal message. If you haven't yet (or they haven't yet) accepted the friend invitation, then they won't be in your contact list yet.

Try accepting the friend invite and then sending them a message.

Or let me know if I've completely missed the point :-)

I don't know how this fits in exactly, or if it's a site problem.

In the last couple of days, I've had a window pop up that says Stack Overflow and something about line 168.

One time when this occured, I was scrolling through a long discussion (this one I believe).

The other time that I remember, I was again in a long discussion and clicked on the name of the contributor.

If it helps with this, I'm using IE6 and I beleive the pop-up window said something about Internent Explorer error. (When I click on okay, the box goes away and everything continues as if it hadn't appeared).

There are a couple of things that I noticed that are more features than bugs.

First, I was looking through the conditions list. I think that it has been mentioned before - Celiac disease is missing from the list of conditions.

Other question - is there a way to browse for friends based on a condition. For example - suppose I want to look for other Type 1's. Is there any way to search for friends based on that part of the profile?

John Crowley replied September 9, 2008 11:30 AM

The searching for friends by condition has been a feature we've considered. It's a fine line because of privacy issues. We don't ever want our members to feel like their trust has been violated in any way. We've tried to provide lots of privacy options so each individual member can control what they want to share and what they want to keep private.

I'd love for members to weigh in on whether they would be comfortable if others could search for them by their conditions.

AaronS replied September 9, 2008 11:40 AM

Since I brought up the topic here - I'll weigh in on this.

Since anyone can see conditions I've identified by looking at my profile, in a way they aren't exaclty "private". Since I've identified them, I don't mind if people search based on the condition.

On the other hand, if you do allow this, perhaps you could also add some flags to the condtions (like other personal information) as to whether or not they are shared. That way, if someone doesn't want to be searched on by condition, they wouldn't be included in the list.

steadb replied September 9, 2008 1:23 PM

John et all, I thought that we added fine grain controls for privacy on the conditions?

John Crowley replied September 9, 2008 1:32 PM

Indeed, you can now control the privacy settings of your diabetes conditions separate from any and all other conditions.

And Aaron is exactly right, if we allowed searching for friends by condition, we would only display the results of those who had their conditions set as "open to public."

AaronS replied September 10, 2008 7:04 AM

How do I control the privacy settings of Health Conditions? If I go to the my conditions page on my profile, the only option I see is to remove the condition. I don't see any setting that is similar to the contact setting information.

John Crowley replied September 10, 2008 7:07 AM

From your profile page, you can click on the "Privacy Manager" tab. On the Privacy Manager page, you should be able to control the settings for all you information including your diabetes conditions and your other conditions.

Skoob replied September 10, 2008 4:58 PM

So how did you handle this drastic change in both your sons life and your own?

Toma replied September 10, 2008 1:03 PM

Since type 1 and type 2 are different I think iyt is valuable to be able to search out others with similar diseases. Also for arthritis and other diseases associated with inflammation. We have the option of making things public or private in our profile so why not. I think it would be a valuable tool.

Rita replied September 10, 2008 1:43 PM

I agree too, i think it's a great idea to have a search by Type1 or 2. Since everybody who using this site have diabetes, i don't think it's against their privacy. It's up to a personal preferences how much do you want to share with others, and that way they can use the personal setting to be in that kind of search or not.

morris.js replied September 10, 2008 2:03 PM

I think there needs to be a place in the recipe section that when you find a recipe you want to keep without printing that says save this receipe. Then you can go to my saved recipes and find the receipe you want without trying to remember where you found it in the first place. I don't have a printer to print anything, so when I find a recipe I want to try or one I really like I have to write it down. I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say. Thanks so much Lisa

Click on "File" in the upper menu, then on "Save As..". A box will come up where you can make a new file (i.e. "Recipes"). Name your recipe, then click "Save" and you'll have it. Not difficult at all. You could even have your daughter show you how to place the recipe folder on your desktop as a shortcut, so you could just click from there to see your recipes. She may need to help you the first time, but it's very easy.

So, here's the explanation. The site operates on UTC or Universal Time Code. It's a little complicated to explain, but basically it's like the site operates in its own time zone. Without this in place, all the events listed in the calendar would shift by an hour whenever Daylight Savings Time started or ended.

Eventually, we want to add a time zone option to everyone's profile so that you see all the time postings according to your local time. But until we're able to address all the technological issues, we will simply ask for your patience.

The only thing we have been able to figure out here is that the phone number field has two dashes in it. If you don't delete the dashes, it will say that your phone number is invalid.

We will try to get that field fixed so that the dashes are not there. But in the mean time, try deleting the dashes and then typing in your full 10-digit phone number and it should work.

I refreshed the page, etc., but can't get it to update. This is just an FYI, no need to reply to this. Thanks & good luck.

This site is so user friendly... I just arrived, but from what I can see you are on top of things. This is great to have in case something breaks... so thoughtful... It's nice to know you are paying attention... j

Roger,

Product Reviews are limited to supplies and equipment. The Discussions area is a better avenue for trading information about what you like/don't like about Diabetic Connect. Feel free to start a discussion about this topic. Hope this helps and hope you are doing well.

Thanks.
Tony

The first day I came online with this website I saw a long list of carbohydrates that a member had made. It gave their grams in our diets. I didn't know about tracking so I didn't click it. Now, I cannot find it anywhere, not even through search. Can anyone help me, did anyone track this? I could really use it. Thanks. Lani

I have posted photos to my page documenting my weight loss. Although the picture looks fine when you go to my photos, what shows on my page is just my mid-section! Not exactly what I was aiming for! Is there a way to choose a window from the photo to fit on my page? You know, like my face?

Tita,

Sorry for your experience. We have a new photo display coming on line in the near future. Unfortunately, for now, we do not having cropping.

Perhaps you can crop what you need in Paint on your computer?

I want the whole picture to show my weight loss progress in the album, but would like to be able to choose what portion of the picture shows on my page.

Hi John ,

It would be a "search " botton for the recipes that we could search with a key word.I sometimes read a recipe and a few days later decide to make it however can not find the recipe if I don't go one by one.Or there is such an option but I have not found out yet.Can you pls advise if there is a such an easy way to search?
Thanks , thanks...

Birdy,
Thanks for the suggestion. We are currently putting the finishing touches on a major site update. Search function for all sections is one of the major upgrades.

I know it's kind of a pain right now with the recipes. If you really need to find one, I have a way to search the database and can send you the link.

Could I add that my inbox says there are now 2 items outstanding but nothing is highlighted, so how do i get it back to zero. Thanks, Carol

John Crowley replied 4 days ago

We've sent out a couple of site notifications recently. Inside your inbox, look at the gray links at the top. There's Messages, Sent Messages, Friend Invites, and Notifications. Have you checked the Notifications link?

Let me know.
