My husband is on Lantus for his long term insulin and it appears to be making his blood sugars higher every time the endocrinologist increases it. We have discussed it with every endocrinologist the VA has given him but they tell us its not possible. His nutrionist disagrees and says that too much Lantus at night can raise you blood sugar in the morning. Has anyone else run into this with lantus?

Thank you Alan. That might be an option with him. Its been a frustrating nightmare with him for both of us. I know it bothers him cause he doesn't know what to do and it frustrates me because I feel helpless to helping him solve the problem.

That is what we have done in the past but his sleep schedule is so off because of his sleep apnea we haven't been able to test at that time. I am positive he is dropping at 3am though.

It's possible but would require some investigation. If he is taking way too much and dropping low during the night when he is asleep he may be rebounding quite badly and wake up with high blood sugar. It could also be other things. What sort of numbers is he seeing before he goes to ed and when he wakes up?

Yes … when there is too much insulin the BS drops too low, and the liver fights back by releasing sugar to try to bring it to normal.
Maybe try eating a snack with protein before bed because it lasts a long time and may prevent the BS from getting too low, and therefore eventually going high.
I am on 17 units of Lantus at bedtime, plus Humalog at every meal. -

The nutrionist explained that to us but the endocrinologist doesn't seem to get it. The bad part of using the VA system is the doctors are interns so they are still learning. The veterans are their test projects it seems.

Just give the snack thing a try. I usually have something with peanut butter before bed.

When he goes to bed reading are 150 or so and when he wakes up some days its up in the 250 range. We are trying to get his day time readings lower but with such a high am reading it has been a challenge.

The bad part is testing at three am doesn't work since most of the time he doesn't go to bed until 1:30 or 2am. Been trying to get him to go to bed earlier so we can do a couple weeks of 3am readings but has not worked yet.
