Free Excel Spreadsheets to monitor BG levels

My name is Fred Munzlinger. I was diagnosed as type II diabetic in April 2009. My doctor said I could control my blood glucose levels with diet and exercise. He prescribed a blood glucose meter and told me to take measurements three or four times a day. At that point, I was on my own.

I went to the internet to learn about type II diabetes. I also went to the internet to find free software that I could use to record BG readings, meals and exercise and times. I was disappointed, so I created an Excel spreadsheet. I am a retired computer software engineer and enjoyed creating the spreadsheets. I also found that my doctor did not want to analyze all my data and that I had to be my own analyst.

I am offering these Excel spreadsheets to anyone who would like them. They are free. I hope you find them useful. I could use constructive criticism and suggestions.

Send me your email address and I will send you the Excel spreadsheets.

It is generally a really bad idea to list your full email address on a public forum. Spammers search the internet for pages such as this one to collect a bunch of unsuspecting people's email addresses.

We will see what we can do about setting up a link to simply download the excel spreadsheet directly without having to exchange email addresses.

Mizzou replied October 31, 2009 5:39 PM

I'd love to get one too. :-)

Father Fred replied November 2, 2009 5:29 PM

Hello John;

I thought I was the only one with a lousy doc. He gave me the diagnoies, wrote a script for metformin and tester. Said test tree times a day. That was the extent of it. No follow up. No information on the disease ect. I did't take it serious untill NOW. Two years lateter. I'm now in a panick trying to learn and do right by myself. I would love a spead sheet. Will e-mail you. Thanks much!!

OK, here are a couple of links to download these Excel spreadsheets directly. By sheer coincidence, I have been working on an "official" Diabetic Connect Blood Sugar Log spreadsheet for several weeks. So I'm including a link to download Fred's spreadsheet and one for the Diabetic Connect version. They both do similar things. So you can try them both and see which one you like best.

Hello John;

I like what you have developed. You have some computing skills and talent. You should have made yours available to members a long time ago. Congradulations on a job well done.
I also sent you a one week master. This spreadsheet is slightly diffierent. It specifically has an exercise sheet that is not in the four week master. Some people like and use the exercise sheet. You might want to make it available also.

Great work

I have a MacBook, and I don't have Excel. I do have a program called Open Office which makes an Excel program useable on a Mac. It is a free download from Sun Microsystems (the Java folks). The web address is: www.sun.com
I hope this helps the other people who have Macs. :)

This is an excellent suggestion. I have open office on a PC that does not have Excel and it opens the spreadsheet. If you do not have excel on a PC, then download open office from the site listed above. The spreadsheets should work.

You either need Microsoft Excel or Open Office to open them. You can download Open Office for free from www.sun.com
Fred Munzlinger

Father Fred replied 4 days ago

What do you mean how can I get to them? They were downloaded to a directory on your computer. Do a search for the as a file "4_week-Master.xls" and you should find the directory they are located in. Then open the file with Excel or Open Office.
