Welcome. You have come to a great place to meet others like yourself and to get help and have questions answered. Good luck with working out the kinks of a new diagnoses. I have been a diabetic for 13 years and still find kinks to work through.

Welcome to the family. You are very far from being alone. This is a great place to come with questions about the day-to-day aspect of living with diabetes. Of course, you should always keep in close touch with your health care professional but many of us have been living with diabetes for a very long time. Feel free to ask anything you like.

Welcome. I was diagnosed with Type 2 in June 2007. This is a great place to get info and support. One thing I have learned is that diabetes affects each person differently. What works for one may not work for another. It does get easier with time, just hang in there. Unfortunately you've got lots of company.

Welcome Christopher. You picked a great site to learn how to deal with being diabetic. The folks here have been so helpful and have become a daily lifeline in my house. Read..read..and read some more and don't hesitate to ask questions. We're all different here, but have one thing in common....living with diabetes.

Welcome Christopher! I am a newly diagnosed diabetci too (Aug.) This is the best place to start. Read thru some of the older articles, there is a wealth of information here. I have learned so much! Take it one day at a time, take good care of yourself, and come back often! Suzy

Hi Chris! Welcome! You can always find information, help, and compassion here. What wonderful folks who are so willing to help anyone.
If your doctor has suggested a class for newly diagnosed diabetics, go! I went to such a class, and it was a tremendous help. They are sometimes in hospitals or in diabetes centers.
Good luck!
Sal

My doctor has not mentioned any classes to me. Although i would like to learn a lot more about these classes. If you can tell me about them i would be very great full. I am interested in what they do in these classes and where i can possibly find one near me. I will also ask my doctor about them. Thank you for bringing them up to me. Christopher

salmanda replied October 29, 2009 11:27 AM

The classes I went to were at a diabetes center. There were 1 or 2 all day classes and 4 half day classes. I learned all about diabetes, diet, exercise, medications, etc. My insurance covered the cost of the classes, and I can go there for monitoring and support with a diabetes nurse and/or dietician. Check with your doctor's office. It was my doctor who referred me to the program.

Thank you very much on the info. I will be talking with my doctor on mnonday and i am going to ask her all about these classes. This is something that i am interested in so i can learn more about my diabetes. I hope you have a great weekend and talk soon.

Petrea replied October 30, 2009 6:58 AM

You could also check with your local hospital. Ours give classes and that is where I took mine and they were very helpful.

dj sonic replied October 30, 2009 11:40 PM

Thank you so much for that info, I will actually be checking the hospital out here and see if they have any. I asked my doctor about the classes and she said she will get a list for me on where they hold them...

salmanda replied October 31, 2009 1:51 AM

That's great dj. The classes were actually held at the hospital here for years. Then they built a diabetes center, so they are all there now. I am sure many hospitals offer the programs I am talking about. You have a great weekend also! :) Sal

Hi Christopher and welcome! Like the others said, classes are so important. One of my local hospitals is where I went and they still keep in touch with me, though I completed my last class in January. They will call me every 6 months and for a while it was every 3 months, to see how I am doing, remind me to get my blood work done (cholesterol levels and A1C number) you will soon learn what foods you can tolerate, and how much. I can't emphasize enough, the importance of not only the classes, and a site like this, but the right foods and regular exercise. There are certain things you need to know when you get sick, even a sinus infection, cold, or stomach virus, etc. Are you on pills or insulin? I am always curious what other's symptoms are that bring them to the doctor, how they know something is wrong. You will find lots of help here. I was scared at first, just like anyone, even though mine was caught early and once you see how well you can do following everything as you are supposed to, you will feel better both physically and emotionally.

dj sonic replied November 2, 2009 10:16 PM

Thank you for your comment and help. I will be starting in a class in 2 weeks when they open it again at my local hospital. As for me, i am on Pills (metformin and Amiryl) and insulin (Novolon R and Lantus) too. As for a cold or anything i haven't had one yet this year, although i did get my flu shot the day i found out i had diabetes. I have been eating the right things so far and i am walking 6 miles a day. I am thinking of increasing my walks to about 10 miles a day, but i will stay with the smaller lenght for now lol.... I will let everyone know how the classes are when i start them. I hope you all have a great evening and speak to you soon........

salmanda replied November 3, 2009 1:34 AM

Hi DJ,
It all sounds great! Wow...6 miles? I'm impressed...that exercise will help control your blood sugar (BS) too. Your numbers must have been very high for the doctor to put you on all those meds right off. Do you mind sharing what they were?

dj sonic replied November 7, 2009 3:51 AM

When i first got tested on september 30th 2009, my blood sugar was at 561. My doctor was in shock and told me it was the highest she as ever seen. So she had me start off on all the meds that she could give me so i could get it down before i went into a diabetic coma. And i was greatful she did, because at the time i was loosing weight so fast it was scary. But after taking these meds, i have been gaining my weight back and it has made me smile a lil more.
