Hey yall —

I'm Ian with Chicago-basd Health Sciences Institute — we offer the nation's only accredited chronic care certification program for doctors and nurses.

So I'm curious — what role has the internet and internet communities such as these had in your diabetes?

I dont have diabetes, but for me internet forums on immunology and nutrition really helped me by inspiring me to get proactive/more hands-on about my health and quit smoking.

beyond just helping facilitate that A-HA! moment about eating and living healthier/smoke cessation, i actually learned alot about good vitamins & practical steps to take from others going through the same as me.

so friends lets hear it!

The internet has been a big part of my life since I became diabetic. I use the internet to look up certaim symptoms that I may have. I just recently joined this site because I I wanted to see what other diabetics are talking about. It has helped me as far as getting recipes and healthy snacks. I also like to see how other diabetics are taking care of their diabetes.

Hi forrest: I too like to hear others tell what they are dealing with with their diabetes, and how they are handling it. I have been told by my family at times to stop doing so much research due to the fact that you do at times run into things that stress you out and depress you.

I am on the internet quite a bit and really enjoy this site. It has lead me to good information and I feel as though the friendships I have thrugh this site help a great deal in both good and bad times. Unlike your stop smoking issue living with diabetes is a daily challenge and one that will not go away so learning how others cope is of great help.

Oh it's played a HUGE role in my life. I have learned so much about it, I am inspired to make changes in my diet, made many friends that have helped me thru hard times that were caused by my Diabetes. Mainly it's been this site though I have to admit. But also interested in lowering my cholesterol cause its quite high. I am a smoker and having major issues quiting, I have been developing a great support system here though. I just dunno, I can not find a way...and have major breathing problems so it's vital I do quit. So that's my main target at the moment. So ANY help there would be appreciated! Hugs! Sheila

Oh and Lipsie,

This AWESOME newish approach in healthcare/intervention is called 'Motivational Interview'. Google it! See if anyone in your area is good at it.

Its evidence-based and constructed around researched principles, and its really cool and effective since throughout it, the idea is for the doctor/nurse/health coach, etc to sit down with you and just TALK with you.

And the best thing is that YOU get to do most of the talking and the interviewer just has you articulate what you want out of life, then a health plan can be built around your larger life goals — its very solution-focused and recommended for people having troubles dropping the cigarette.

Another avenue to consider is acupuncture. I've even heard people give + feedback on hypnosis!

Point is there's ALOT out there for you, but good on you with developing the support group you have. Good luck, and take it from someone whose crossed over from smokes to no smokes — its possible!!

Thanks to the internet, I can find answers to my health questions easily and quickly! It's very easy to stay informed, and you can always check with a proffesional such as your doctor to confirm the accuracy of info obtained.

And the funniest thing of all is that if you watch any show on TV revolving around healthcare — e.g. HOUSE, patients using the internet to help with their illnesses is presented as a bad thing, that doctors get annoyed at, as an ultimate DISOBEDIENCE, flying in the face of their knowledge. I even remember the 'issue' being brought up in Scrubs, now that i think about it....

so the question is, have your doctors ever recommended sites like these to you? or do you feel as if they'd be skeptical of all this? Or perhaps there's been a flip to how the medical world sees internet communities.... lets hope so!

I've had a doctor or two who definitely expressed negative opinions about health advice and info over the internet. I also have doctors that disagree on the same health subject. Doctors are only human and they have a practice in which they practice the ART OF MEDICINE on you! Medicine is not an exact science, and there are numerous ways and opinions on how to treat a diabetic. I say get informed as much as possible from reliable sources in order to form a good constructive opinion and take some responsiblity for your own health along with the doctor of your choice!!!

Amen, brother: We have got to take resposibility for ourselves and our health. That is why we should continously be educating ourselves. What thing works for one person, may not work for another. That is why I keep stressing the fact that "Knowledge is Power!"

I have never had a MD refer me to a site like this before and I have been thru a few until I was satisfied with the one I have. Sheila

This site has been a God-send to me. I always go to the internet for information. This site in particular has helped me so much to learn about my disease and try to get it under control. Don't know what I'd do without all the great friends and information that I have found here. Suzy

My doctor prefects to contact me via email. Kaiser has a great email system. Also, all emails become part of my permanant record. If I have an issue or just want to chat or request I test I would like done, I send him a request, he sends a reply back to me. This allows me to control my care as much as possible. I also know that I can make an appointment with him at any time and see him face to face. I order all my refills via email. I check online for advice and answers to questions I might have. If I cant find the answer I want, then I send my dr an email with that question.
Good day to you.
