how to get healthy

why do you gain weight when u first become a diabetic? how do exercise when you have no where to go?

I like to take a walk sit in the chair and use a dumbell and watch TV play poker theres a lot of things you can do if you wish too

A lot of the time weight gain is is associated with blood sugar control and/or diet and portion control. Keep in mind you don't become diabetic overnight. Diabetes is something that you've probably had for some time now and didn't know about. Work with your educators, doctor and nutritionist to help make a plan to help keep weight under control.

As far as exercise....don't set your goals too high.....if you aren't getting any or very little exercise right now don't try to set a goal of an hour of exercise a day because you will probably set yourself up for failure and will feel bad when you can't reach this goal. Start with a couple of minutes in the chair and a couple of minutes of walking and add to your routine.

Like Harlan said sitting and working with a small weight is a start....use a small 10-15 oz canned food item if you don't have weights and work your arms while sitting (you can slowly increase the size of the canned item to add weight). Walking is great.....anything that increases your heart rate.....if it's more than you were doing yesterday then it's a step in th right direction. Keep your goals small and add to them as you go....baby steps....good luck :o)

By the time we have an actual diagnosis, chances are the problem has been there for quite awhile...Like Sheri said, disease doesn't occur spontaneously over night... Physical exercise is as much mental as it is physical because you have to think to move... I was physically injured in a serious car accident a few years ago... prior to the accident I had been actively engages in many physical activities... it was a life style... because of the accident, my metabolism became sluggish... Chronc pain became a daily challenge to cope with... I began a path of multiple surgeries that would last for a number of years... The sudden loss of autonomy and good health was such a shock that without realizing it, I became lethargic and depressed... We may be predisposed to certain diseases... but until our metabolism is stressed suficientcy to trigger our particular predisposition to disease... we go along without thinking about it... then bam... it happens and we feel shocked and possibly betrayed by our body... why me? and all mannor of questions come up... the bottomline however is that when we meet our liabiities... and we are born with them... ticking, ticking... until sooner or later we face the work of accepting them... or not... If we are surrounded with supportive family, and good friends... it can make it easier... but if we aren't... like a lot of people... we have to create those supportive relationships, and the first one has to be oneself.Self care is essential in setting up your best support system... that means taking a good honest look at what you have to work with, from where you are right now... wishing or regreting isn't going to cut it... facing it head on... and making a plan is what needs to be done, and the sooner the better... there is a saying... " Wise is the man who learns from experience, but wiser is the man who learns from someone else's experience". that's what makes this site so appealing... there are endless accounts of others who are telling their stories... of trial and error, stops, and starts, hopes and failures on their journey to healing the effects of diabetes... I do not know your circumstance... I do not know what your limitations involve... I can't advise you about what or how or where to get your needs met... but I can remind you of what you already know... and I believe we all have inner knowing... I think when we allow ourselves to be still with our heart... listen to it... we know what it is we need to do... if we will begin... today... doing what we can, today... and be kind and gentle with our limitations while building our strength up... we will change our lives for the better... contentment is the foundation of happiness... no one can hold the frequency of happiness constantly... but we can hold he frequentcy of contentment by accepting the work in front of us... and knowing that we are doing our level best to thrive and grow and become more of who we already are... The most beautiful people in the world are those who use all of what they have to do as much as what is to be done as posible... That is what If we only have fifty percent today of what we used to have a hundred percent of... (energy, health etc.) and we use all of that fifty percent... instead of grieving the loss of the other fifty percent... we will be productive... the alternative is to lose the rest of what we have by neglecting it... life is either growing or decaying... and that is what we must keep asking ourselves... am I growing? if you want to exercise... you will... life is a series of chances... through the choices we make along the way... I wish you inspiration from within your self to inspire you so that your example will resonate with others who want to vibrate to the beat of life... tick tock... tick tock...

I decided to start off very slow until I got use to exercise. On nice days I ride my bike about 2-3 miles a day, and on rainy days I walk up and down the stairs while washing clothes. And I also have a inside stepper which helps a lot.
