Testing for relatives who may be predisposed to diabetes

I am T1 and have been for 33 years. My twin daughters recently were tested to see if they have something in their blood to see if they are predisposed to contract diabetes at some point in their life. Has anyone else heard of this? They are to get the results in 6 weeks.

RESULTS ARE BACK: The blood tests show no markers for either of my twins for diabetes.

no I haven't heard of this but I'd be very interested to find out more information. I'm type 2, my grandpa was type 2 and my mom was type 1. I have two kiddos and it worries me as to what I may have passed to them. Please share any info you may have! =)

Piper5,

That would be an interesting test.Many people who have been very healthy and exercise regularly get diabetes. If we could get a "heads up" what the future might hold for us or our children, it would be beneficial. Education then would help in being prepared on how to cope with it.

Everyone in my family gets tested for diabetes on occassion. It seems that everyone in my family (both sides) get diagnosed as adults. I was just diagnosed a Type 1 diabetic at age 39. My father was diagnosed at age 62 (type 2). No one in my husbands family is a diabetic. So I will be very very curious to see how my daughter makes out in the future. The doctors tell me it seems to be genetic for me.

Hi again Pam. Guess I should have read your first post before asking what type you were, huh! Your father was diagnosed at about the same age as I. I tell my two daughters to keep a close watch on their bs levels now since this happened to me later in life. My oldest has a thyroid condition, and could be more susceptible. But, that doesn't mean anything, it could happend or not to the other as well.

if there is one I have noticed...it is that anything can happen anytime to anyone...whether there is a history or not....thats why we all just have to hang in there and live life no matter what:)

I am not surprised that they can test for markers. Look at all the diseases they can test for...tay sachs, breast and ovarian cancer (bracha gene), etc. Modern medicine is great.

I worked with a genetic counselor re breast cancer and she said that even tho my mother, and her mother died from breast cancer, and my sister had it (at that time and later died from it), as did my mom's sister and my father's mom (died from other things) that I was more likely to get colon cancer (father's sister had it) than breast cancer. Who'd have thought that?

I'm happy to hear your daughters are healthy.

To address some of the other questions - if you have type 2 diabetes, your children are at increased risked for developing type 2 diabetes.
