Thank you- i will try and get the book. I am just scared because I never thought it could happen to me. You know you ask your doctor things but after awhile they look at you like just deal with it already so I get afraid to ask things

I tell everyone about the book "Reversing Diabetes" by Julian Whittaker. It's loaded with easy-to-understand information, TONS of info on eating foods that will work for you, and insights on exercise, medications and vitamins that your doctor will never tell you. It's for sale in the BOOKS section here and on Amazon for about $14. Well worth it!

Hi KellyAnn317,
I am T2 since Feb. 2009. Amazon has a lot of good books on carbs. dlife.com has a lot of recipes and loads of information about some things to eat and not to eat. DiabeticLivingOnline.com has a lot of recipes also and other information.

Another place you can get good information is to Google the Glycemic Index. It gives you foods in various levels that can raise your sugar level and the higher the level the more you have to eat in moderation. Many of the recipes in this site are also very helpful. do not cut carbs out completely but be more vigilant about them. Also cut out white: sugar, potatoes, rice, bread, etc and replace them with whole grains and so forth. good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Here is on site that is by one of our members. http://www.diabetic-diet-secrets.com/members

Amy's site is excellent. She is the co-founder here. Lots of great information http://www.diabetesmine.com

Of course there is the American Diabetes Association. They have free booklets you can order, great info and some very basic first steps in getting used to your new condition. http://www.diabetes.org

DLife is kind of cool and they have a TV show as well. I watch it once in a while, but the info is all here for when ever you need. http://www.dlife.com

There are a lot more, but these are a good start. I would start with the American Diabetes Association site and go from there. Plus, of course, there is all the wonderful info you can get from this site. If you use the search tab at the top right of the page, you can search for any topic you want to know about and get our opinions and experiences as well. Welcome to the site. I hope you enjoy it.

Hey Kellyann!

Welcome to DC. It's okay to be afraid. I know you probably feel like things are coming at you so fast you are unsure of what to do.

Please remember that everyone is different and what works for one person may not work the same for someone else.

Here are some of the things I did when I was diagnosised:

1) I stopped drinking sodas.
2) I started drinking Coke Zero instead of Coca Cola Classic if I felt the need to have a soda.
3) I cut out as much sugar as I could from my diet. It's impossible to cut all sugar out and I didn't even try really. I just switched to sugar free jam or jelly (I use Smucker's sugar free).
4) I switched to multigrain pastas and bread and started eating brown rice instead of white.
5) I started eating more vegetables and fruit and less carbs.

Something else you can do is watch your portion sizes. Believe it or not the portions you get at a restaurant is no where near what we should be eating, most times it is WAY more!

The best thing you can do is take a diabetes education class if your insurance will pay for it or you may want to check with public health in your county to see if they offer a class.

Try not to think of this as something earth shattering. I know it feels like it in some ways, but try to be positive. This could be the beginning of a journey toward a healthier you!!

*hugs*

Judi
