Watching my own diet even in assisted living

I find that at meal time, I have to cut back on portions and what I am given to eat. I have kept to my diabetic diet for years this way I just figured in assisted living, it would be done for me. I still have to keep watch on it myself and make tough decisions like, can I have a piece of that homemade apple pie too? I try to leave the dining room before dessert is given out and that helps.

So they don't have a diabetic menu for those who are diabetic? Hmmm. You would think that they would. That has to make it a little difficult.
Maybe you can request some kind of sugar free jello or something.

But still, I am glad to see you are doing so well and you are safe. I'm sure you will resist the temptation most of the time :) I know I'm not 100% at following my diet.

Hi, Turtle! So glad that you are adjusting to your new living arrangements! It is questionable what a facility does for a person---When I was in the work force, we had special, diabetic diets--for the diabetics. Things seem to be much looser these days, and folks are left more to their own devices---

So, leaving before desserts are served seems like an easier way to avoid that situation, but it does seem like you could request a sugar-free jello or such, surely they make them available, or would, if it was requested. They probably don't want to make such IF no one requests it, would be a waste. So just ask and let us know what happens.

Love you!! Pat R

like others have said Congrats on your will power. Maybe you could talk with the nutritionist on staff and see if they could do something for you. The worst they could say is no....and maybe there are others in your situation who were too afraid to speak up! Best of luck to you and I'm so happy that you're doing so well there. You must be more at peace now! God Bless!

You should ask for diabetic menue They should make diabetic food for you is this a private place your staying at. i found that even whhen i was in hospital they gave to much food to me here in the U.S. shhoould find out who plans your meals and talk to them . hhope they have a dietition on staff. well keep trying.

Pat Roth replied October 7, 2009 12:48 AM

When I was in the hospital for those 2 weeks, My diet card said "Diabetic 1600 cal." But it was way too much food!! I just ate small portions of a variety of foods, and was satisfied and did not gain, until I came home and went overboard for awhile, but think I am in check once more! Pr

They only serve one thing at a meal. There is no diabetic diet meal. Today, for example, the cook made wonderful homemade spagghetti. The servings were huge. I had to eat less noodles than what I was given because they gave me more than 1c.

I am able to get yoplait in the am and only diabetics are aloud to have it. We have to give up something else on our plates. I usually say "please keep the eggs". I do not care for eggs.

So I march on, minding my own diet. Oh, and no, there is no nutritionist here.

Wow, Turtle!! I am so glad that you KNOW what you should eat, and have SOME lee-way in your decisions!! Do you get enough to eat? Cheezzz----Sounds skimpy to me---but that is how we ate in the old days, a platefull of spaghetti, or fried potatoes, but just assummed that care homes were in better shape, diet wise, than that one! Hmm, maybe we need to send you a fruit basket! Hang in there and am praying that your situation will soon stabilize, and let them KNOW when you are hungry!! Love you!! Pat R

Turtle replied October 10, 2009 7:13 AM

Hungry is the word Pat. The only snack offered in the day is @ 6 pm right after dinner! It makes no sense to me. A fruit basket w/ cheese and crackers sounds so good! The spaget was a big plate full. Don't get me wrong but I could not eat all those noodles on a diabetic diet. I wish a nutritionist could come talk to the cook. I am not the only diabetic here.

When I was in the hospital following the birth of our second child, they must have believed in starving a body as they served only a cup of soup, a piece of canned fruit, maybe a half sandwich! I was young and SLIM (weighed 135# then). My cranky mother-in-law, was blessed to send me a fruit basket!! I was so THANKFUL!!!! I didn't eat much in those days, but after all!!!

Can you keep whatever you want to eat, in your room, or is it confiscated?? Love and Hugs, to you, Pat R

Yeah, out of sight out of mind. That is how it works best for me too. I suppose that unless you are on "this will kill you" restrictions, they pretty much don't worry about it. That is kind of sad. Have you talked to the staff dietitian to see if she can get you set meals?

daniel velazco replied October 10, 2009 3:59 PM

Hi Turtle,
Is there any chance that you can talk to the cook or someone in charge to see how many people are diabetic so that they may get a diabetic menu.
Glad that you like your new liveing conditions. Take care and keep us up dated on your diet. Dan

Pat Roth replied October 10, 2009 5:54 PM

Surely if you diabetics get together and request a better balanced diet, they would be glad to comply as they should value you as a person, and also the money you pay for your supervision. Most folks are reasonable----Love, PR

Turtle,

I was in assisted living about two and a half years back and we did not have a nutritionist either but they did separate diets from regulars to diabetics BUT turned around and let us have second helpings which was WAY too much, which I did not have the fabulous control you are showing...pat yourself on the back hun, excellent job! Sorry you are having a time of it with this there! On the other hand, how other the other arrangements working out there may I ask cuz I know it can be rough living like that. Hugs! Sheila

Pat Roth replied October 10, 2009 5:56 PM

Guess no situation is perfect, but surely it can be improved upon for the long haul---meantime, something is coming your way, for the short haul!! Hugs, PR

Turtle replied October 10, 2009 11:12 PM

We had barbaq chicken for lunch w/ veggies and potatos and homemade apple pie...still warm. I gave in and ate my pie and told them to hold the potatos so I did not have them.

Yes, I can keep stuff in my room and I set up a little kitchen for myself. There is no stove or oven in the apts. I have my microwave, toaster oven, small refridgerator, coffee pot, ( so I can heat water too and have suger free hot cocoa...yes! ), and I have some canned food I brought w/ me from my last place.

What gets me is they get all my social security check every month except a small amount for myself and Sunny.

This months check got sent back to social security and will probably be sent back out next month. That was because of my move.

I am blessed to have my place. I am complaining and should be grateful for my safe home. And I am grateful but I think I am not sounding it. am sorry.

Turtle

ps...later- I am making some sleepy-time tea to see if it will help me fall asleep tonite. I am fortunate to have my micro- as many people here who are considered residents but not assisted living do not have some of the comforts I have. I have my own bathroom (a must for me ) the residents have to share bathrooms out in the hallway. NO WAY. I like my new home. It is just an adjustment. Oh, they have to share showers out in the hallway too. Yuck! That cannot be clean!

Hey, go ahead and complain--vent, relieves the tension so that you are FREE to let go and adjust more comfortably, WITHOUT our enemy, GUILT!! Of course it takes time to adjust, but it helps ME to know more about your living arrangements so I can VISUALIZE you in your warm home!! So glad that you have a microwave, coffee pot etc. It reminds me of going on vacation with our 4 kids and looking for any which way to help provide the little extras of HOME, like hot cocoa--some freedoms, I always loved the challenge of making do---with whatever, rather a bit of pioneer blood still in me, My mom was like that too, only in those days, it was day to day, existence, but was still fun!

Stay warm!! Does Sunny sleep on your cold feet? My cousin has a little 12# doggie that sleeps on hers. Hugs, na Love, Pat R
