What do you do to exercise?

What do you do when it is -30F and you cannot get outside?

I have severely bad joints and back (many surgeries). Swimming seems to be the only thing I can do consistently. But when the cold weather hits then what? I am a displaced worker, so I don't have money to join a gym. I'm looking for FREE things to do that wont strain the joints or back.

UPDATE: maybe I need to be clearer? When I say: "bad joints and back (many surgeries)," I'm saying I cannot do things that have a bunch of strain on the joints and back. I've also had my right foot totally reconstructed and walking is a very difficult and straining activity. Biking is hard on the knees and back!

This is why I swim because it is a very low impact thing that can bring up the heart rate. If I could move to a warmer climate where I could swim all the time, I would!

Thanks mamaoak for the chair exersises, I've looked some up on the web but if you have something special, let me know.

Do you happpen to have a mall near by? if so, try going to the mall and walk around if it has an indoor routunda. At the mall near my house, they open the doors an hour early to allow people to walk around the routunda before the mall opens. Its free and the mall gets word of mouth free publicity. good luck.

I live out in the country, the closest indoor mall is over an hour away.

I'm lucky that I have a bowflex gym but I hardly use it...... I use a yoga dvd from the biggest loser and I record "Shimmy" off of fit tv (it's all belly dancing, most of it is easy and tons of fun!)

Interesting activities, sounds like something to look at! Yeah, I wish i had a bowflex, I'd be on it now.

I have found walking is the best exercise ever. Almost anyone can do it and when the weather is bad outside i have found myself walking back and forth in my house. I look like a crazy woman but it works.

Have you ever tried yoga? There are some great yoga exercises to stretch the back and joints. They are not painful and actually feels good after you're finished. Remember that sometimes your vertebrae get compressed and the stretching helps. Also sometimes heat helps. Easy chair exercises also help to make your muscles stronger and if you keep up the exercises you can increase your exercises to more repetitions. When doing chair exercises try pointing then pulling your feet back for 5 second intervals. It helps your ankle and feet.

Wow! no never tried Yoga. Guess I stereotyped it as something that was for a limber, double-jointed person (that tends to be all I've ever seen doing it).

I have just started a yoga class at the Y. I thought it was going to be all about muscle strength. I was so wrong. It is about breathing, stretching, calming the mind. I find it very relaxing and I feel rejuvenated after. The back stretch and the decompression of the spine is my favorite. I think the name of the kind of yoga I'm doing is Sivananda.

I do exerciaes that involve yoga which help to strech the jounts...BUT, due to the severety of the back issue, I also receive injections into my spine...which has helped greatly under a pain management group...it allows me to do my expercises with out the pain I was having with out it...Find the yoga very helpful and hope that your sucuesses is as great..I also walk everyday that the weather permits....Hope that you have as a pain management group close by as it takes away the pain that has kept me from exercises...Good luck in the future..

I have been using my Wii Fit. It has everything from yoga to balancing, to aerobics and strength training. It is fun and interactive. It also keeps track of your weight, BMI, how often you use it, and at the end of your workout, it tells you how long you worked out. I love it and use it daily. good luck! Suzy

I was having difficulty sleeping at night because my osteoarthritis of the knee was so bad. I bought a copy of the Mayo Clinic Arthritis DVD (Gaiam). Included in it was Soothing Therapies segment by yoga master, Rodney Yee. The first night I did it was the first restful sleep, I had gotten in a long time. I had never done any type of yoga before. This one was easy designed for beginners and relaxing. He has other great yoga DVDS too.

Yoga is AWESOME! As you get older, flexibility becomes even more important. Yoga is a defiantly helps in this are. As an added bonus it helps calms the mind (Yeah, Stress – killer!). Have I mentioned I like yoga? LOL! Good luck!

It is hard for a typeA personality to use yoga. When I could get on the floor-which I can no longer do, nor if I fall can I get up, I found inside, my mind did not yoga, especially when my joints complained LOL

I have severe fibromyligia and shingles on the same hip, leg and knee, so I know what you are talking about. The only thing I could use was the lifestyle walker. Unfortunatly, they do not make it anymore, I am going to see if I can get mine fixed. I discovered, after having this problem for so many years, if you get you body OFF the ground, and swing gently from the hip, the pain in the hip, knee and foot-goes away. Since I also have a heart condition and absolutely needed cardio, this was the only thing I could do that could bring my rate up without severe pain, or chance of falling. These are swing walkers, the striders help, but I get shin splints, but the idea is there if you need movement. The goal was not to impact with gravity, I can use these machines an hour, as long as my knee does not have to bend, where I can only walk for 5 minutes. I am sure there are others in the market place, you will have to experiment, but lifestyle had made a believer out of me. I can still be active-once I get it fixed that is LOL

I seem to be in the same boat. Walking is very difficult. I get severe pain in my thighs and back. I can only stand for a very short time without having some support.. I bought a recumbent stationary bike and that was ok foe awhile. The pool was great, til they cut most of my heel away, and it will be sometime before I can get it wet. Even here in hot and sunny Az, without a heated pool, the season is about 5-6 months. The strider you use, is that where you swing your legs like walking?? That might be my answer. Thanks.

the lifegear walker I have, you swung from your hips, I could go up to a full cardio exercise for an hour, and I can't walk more than 5-10 mintues without pain. They do not make mine anymore unfortunately, but Tony Little has one that is like a skier, similar tech, it is just that it causes me shin splints when I use it. I still have it for when my current one goes completely as I have worn 2 out. I wish I could get another one like mine. Anyway, if it is off the ground, does not use gravity like stair steppers, it makes a big difference if you can't walk, usually you can use these.
