Last edited about 1 month ago May be you are feeling hungry because your body is trying to replenish nutrients it has been missing or you may be ravenous because of the stress of what you have been through is catching up with you or a combination thereof. I encourage you to keep trying to eat in moderation, selecting nutritious foods and checking the effect on your blood sugar ONE DAY AT A TIME. I offer these words of encourgment and hope even if the content isn't useful to you that the intention of trying to show you I care about you comes through!
Alicia039 replied October 3, 2009 4:44 AM I went through this after I had my jaw wired shut after it was broke in a car accident. I had it wired for months and was on a liquid diet. I was 15 at the time and got so darned skinny :) But once my jaw healed and I could start eating again I felt as if I was starving 24/7. It took my body quite a while to get used to eating again. I went from a size 7 to a size 12 very quickly. It was very hard to control.
Pat Roth replied October 3, 2009 1:38 PM Dear Alicia, your words too, make sense, as I recall my eating habits before the surgery---I THOUGHT that I wasn't hungry, when in fact that cancer was eating the fat in my belly, and the size etc. of the tumor made me FEEL FULL! Makes perfect sense when hearing it from others in similar experiences. Thanks so much for your input, it does help---now I don't feel so all alone! Pat R
Pat Roth replied October 3, 2009 1:35 PM Last edited about 1 month ago Dear Anonymous---Thank you so MUCH, your words make sense and I appreciate your kindness! I will try to take one day at a time, and practice control, as you say---Thanks again for your kind, sensible words. Pat R |

I am so glad you have come thru your surgery and are getting healthy again. I have never been thru anything like what you discribe. I just want to encourage you to control your portion sizes and your good choices. I fight the battle of the bulge myself and am newly diagnosed. I am learning to portion and choose wisely. It's not easy, but it is sure worth it. I have lost 14 lbs in the last 8 weeks, and it encourages me to keep going. Hopefully, your weight loss will help you to keep on track. Glad you are feeling better!
Pat Roth replied October 3, 2009 1:54 PM Thank you, Suzy! Like I said at Tops, Mon night, after weighing in a PLUS .2 pounds, even after that surgery---at least I now know what is REALLY ME, not the tumor etc, so the same rules do apply, and even tho I was dissapointed to not have lost MORE, I have lost 20 pounds, so will continue to get back on the band wagon and go from here---

I have run across another little problem, had my stitches out yesterday and my BP was 157/80---When in the hospital it got down in the 90/s over 50's, so they stopped the evening pill, Lisinopril. I am uncertain as to whether to take it or not, with the kidney/ urine---BP issue----Guess I need to go back to my primary Dr., I so HATE to---not sure of how I will be perceived at this point---but guess I better, need a few other basics checked too, my need and use for this oxygen---etc---I am trying to wean myself off of it and doing fine---I think---if I don't gasp when I put it back on, I guess that is a good sign, so am leaving it off more and more, think it has helped the healing process, so now I should be able to go and do as I FEEL able.

Pat,
Pat Roth replied October 4, 2009 12:38 AM Hi, Girls!!! It does help me so much to hear of others and their STARVING feelings!! I did OK this morn then this afternoon I FORCED myself to eat a certain amount of 4 crackers and 1 tbl of peanut butter, at a CERTAIN TIME (just like being in the hospital when you HAVE to wait till eating time----then WAITED (slept and read) till 6pm, supper time, then I made a bee-line for the kitchen and we had SUPPER! And instead of piecing, I ate portions that were filling, and knocked that piecing thing out of my mind!!! I find when I TRY TO NOT EAT--JUST PIECE, it makes my appetite worse, feels like I am starving, when I am not, but if I don't eat enough to feel full, yet stay within limits, I want to eat every minute all day long!! NOT a good plan, Pat! hah--
Anonymous replied October 4, 2009 1:54 AM Pat - I joke about my Catholic guilt..feel guilty about everything...when I fly and use the bathroom I have to clean it before I exit so next person doesn't think I am the slob. SO I understand your concerns that you are wondering if doc will think you were "covering up". But I am also a healthcare professional of some 30 going on 40 years and I am here to tell you you are wasting your time and energy worrying about that! Doc should be worried you are going to give him holy H**** for failure to diagnose. But do find out about your meds -changes are understandable going from home to hospital to home. Take care of yourself and remember it is all about you!!!
Pat Roth replied October 5, 2009 3:06 AM haha--Thanks!! My psychiatrist said he thought that I would blame myself for his getting a flat tire going home. I responded, YES! and that was 40 years ago, think I am improving, but obviously have a ways to go!! Thanks for your realistic common sense!!! Hugs, Pat R |

I hope this information will be helpful. I have read that Steel Oats (breakfast food) provides fiber and fullness so, maybe when you feel the ravenous hunger if you were to eat the Steel Oats it would help your body to feel full longer.
Alicia039 replied October 4, 2009 11:06 PM I am going to have to go get me some Steel Oats. I love oatmeal for breakfast.
Pat Roth replied October 5, 2009 3:08 AM Me too, a substantial breakfast sounds like a good, sensible start to help ward off those snacking fits!! Hugs, Pat R |

After my kidney transplant I gained 27 pounds. Now only was I put on a diet(strict for dialysis) I followed it to a tee. Now after the transplant you can eat what you want to your own diet, like I am diabetic. But I took huge amounts of steroid and was famished. It was due to the steroids, like I was taking Prednisone........Debe
Pat Roth replied October 7, 2009 12:39 AM Now that makes sense, so you had a kidney transplant? Who gave it to you? Were you limited to the amount of eggs that you could eat when your kidney was in distress? I haven''t been back to my main Dr yet, think I will make an appt for next week, that should be about right, had another cat scan done today of that left side----is gradually aching more---don't know why yet--Maybe just normal for after a surgery??
Debe Pendice replied October 7, 2009 3:36 AM I got my transplant in Jan 2007. I had a 26 year old cadaver.........Debe
Pat Roth replied October 7, 2009 3:10 PM Wow---I wondered how that worked!! I asked one of my nurses what they did with old, body parts and he said that they save them for someone else,---BUT mine was already shot---dead for some time, so no one would benefit from that! So glad that you were able to be helped. Now does that mean you still have one kidney, or did the transplant make two kidneys?

lipsie replied October 21, 2009 9:51 PM lol! Sheila
Pat Roth replied October 22, 2009 4:35 PM Hi, Sheila!! Been missing you!! I now have a tad to add to the "starving" sensation---my new med, Glipizide! As I adjust to this new med, for me, it sure does drop you in a heart beat, doesn't it?? Plus the SWEATING and hunger!!! We were on a 2 hr jaunt, got so hungry, talked my hubby into stopping at a spot and devoured crackers and a diet pop, got home and checked and it was 90---so am sure that it was lower earlier---got down to 49 the day before and on retaking it--was 50, plus I didn't feel right----Before when I had an unexpected low, I re-took it and it had been a fluke---THOT so as that time I had felt OK

This may be a tad off of the subject but it still affects WHAT we eat, and thus our BS. I recently had a kidney removed, plus a malignant mass. The problem is, while I was ill,I didnot know why, I was so PLEASED that I had lost my appetite and had lost 20 some pounds!!! Thought that it was strange, for ME---but thought that it was a GOOD THING!'
Not, the cancer was eating the fat in my belly, was getting larger and crowding my intestines to make them feel full, and not want to eat more than a few bites!
Three weeks later, I am STARVED!!
I want to eat EVERYTHING in SITE!!! This is a new twist for me as I can usually control my diet to some extent, but now I get almost panicky about food, I GOTA HAVE SOMETHING< ANYTHING__--NOW!
Has anyone else experienced a similar experience? I do NOT want to regain my lost weight, BUT itis like I have been at times when I was on Prednisone or such, STARVING--BUT I am NOT on ANYTHING at this point!! What to do now, I had been so proud of my efforts to control my intake, losing weight, and holding my BS in check---Now what??? Any advice??
Hugs to All, Pat Roth
