Is it possible to temporarily go from diabetes to pre-diabetes?

I was diagnosed with diabetes, full blown but caught early in Nov, of last year. My highest number on the glocose tolerance test was around 270. It quickly came down. My A1C was 2.5. Three months later A1C was the same. Even after the weight loss, eating right and exercise regularly. I just got my bloodwork back again after 6 months and A1C is 5.4! The nurse said she felt I was qualified as pre-diabetic. I am confused. I wonder if it is possible for me to stay this way, or eventually, it will progress to diabetes again even if I do everything right. I have always understood that diabetes progresses but maybe it is possible I can stay this way for many years? Who else has had this same situation happen?

No, you are just a well controlled diabetic. A pre-diabetic would never ever reach 270. Now, if you made no changes whatsoever and had the good numbers it might be different but the changes you made are all part of controlling diabetes. It's possible to stay controlled but you will never be pre-diabetic. If you want to know for sure, test your blood sugar, eat a 1lb bag of m&ms and then test your blood sugar 1 and 2 hours later. If your blood sugar never goes above 140 you are pre-diabetic. If it goes higher than 140 you are diabetic.

Also, there is no way of knowing if you caught the diabetes early unless you have A1c, fasting glucose and oral glucose tolerance tests every 3 months or so.

Wow! KD, I had posted not too long ago that I had eaten about 2 handfuls of M&Ms (about a reg. individual bag), woke up about 2-1/2 hrs. later feeling ill, sweaty.took sugar level...my meter was flashing "253" w/alarm going off,and the word ketone. I don't know whether I would try a 1lb. bag to see what it would read, would not be good I don't think, after my experience. I wonder if this alone is diagnosis of type 2 diabetes,as you have mentioned? Interesting!

It's kind of a diagnostic test. The OGT is similar except controlled better, it's a sugar drink with 75g of carb and the blood tests are done at specific times by a lab.

sorry I goofed! My A1C was not 2.5 (that isn't possible I don't think for anyone) it was 5.6 at first. Then as correctly stated, found out the other day it went down to 5.4 . That is what I thought, that you are never pre-diabetic just well controlled. But the nurse felt it was possibly prediabetes but I told her that the doctor said I did have diabetes. Thanks!
