Difference in glucose meters

Good morning everyone! I was using the True Trac meter,then received a new wavesense presto meter w/50 test strips in the mail Monday for free!! I first compared it to the True Trac,and,my BS levels were higher on the True Trac meter. I took my level this AM right when I sat up, it was 117(presto) I then took it again just to see as I usually take level after being up for about 15 min, so 15 min. later (had already had 3-4 sips coffee by mistake) and BS level was 176! Could it have gone up that much just from 3-4 sips of coffee?? Even in a non-diabetic person? I did check it against the true trac w/last strip I had,that one said 172 (which usually reads higher)…thank you for your input and have a wonderful day!

kdroberts September 23, 2009 at 2:06 pm0 LikesMeters are not accurate and can be within a range of 20% of your actual blood sugar. I read recently that if the FDA decided to lower that to a 15% accuracy only about 50% of the meters would make the cut. That shows how inaccurate a meter can be. Add in that often for diabetics your blood sugar will continue to rise in the morning until you eat so it's possible that the combo of your blood sugar going up and the meter accuracy are the reasons for the differing numbers. You don;t say what was in your coffee but if there was any sugar, milk or coffee creamer in it that they can all raise your blood sugar.

Darly September 23, 2009 at 10:08 pm0 LikesThere was 2 small teaspoons of sugar,small amount of low fat milk,I was just surprised as it was only 3-4 small sips…just wondered if that would happen to a non diabetic also…Thank you all for your help. I do like the Wave Sense Presto. Trying to really start tracking for my new Doctor's visit on Oct. 7th.

I had used a FreeStyle meter and was happy with it but I signed up for one of the supplies by mail outfits and they sent me a TRUEbalance meter. With the True meter my BG consistently registered 30 points higher than it did with the FreeStyle (which agreed with the meter at the Dr's office). I changed suppliers and they sent me a WaveSense Presto and it is right in line with the FreeStyle. I tend to believe the WaveSense over the True 100%.
Could your count go that high with that much coffee? Yes, it could.
