My accu-check has a battery symbol that warns you when you are getting low and I usually try to change it soon after it appears because if I don't it will just stop. I don't have to get a new one very often and mine never gives me crazy readings as it goes dead.

With most meters there is a warning beep that goes off if you are nearing the end of the battery. You won't get strange or altered readings…it will just die. Depending on the type, you may not be able to test after the warning beep. For instance I use the Breeze2 meter. When I get the low battery light it will not let me inject a new strip, I still have power and can read the memory but can't test. With my Brothers Accu-Check, he can usually get 2-3 more tests once the battery beeps. If you aren't sure it's better to get a new battery.
