As a parent of a type 1 diabetic, I know how important it is to have the right information, support, and treatments. That's why we want to build the best site for diabetics anywhere on the web.

So please tell us:

- What do you like about the site?
- What DON'T you like about the site?
- What features would you like to see added?
- What features do you like the best?
- Any other feedback you feel would be helpful.

Thanks so much for helping us make this site the best it can be.

I like the site so far.

When I first had to create a profile I feel that the "points" need to be addressed up front.

Navigation into what this site is about should be more user-friendly. It took me a bit longer than I like to find out some answers. I love the tabs but maybe change the Main Names of them to make it easier to know where to look. As I test more I will provide suggestions.

I am assuming you know this and will possibly have an "intro" on the welcome page for new users.

I like what you are doing with the site, how it works, what it is based on and the community trust, I really like that. Hopefully users will keep it "real", it would be nice to have a support group that is not too afraid to bring up the real issues/problems.

Addition to Women's Reproductive Problems: HPV
I also did not see MRSA in any category. Looking again.

Once logged in you still see the message.

"hi, come in and look around
We're all friends here—friends who know what it's like to live with diabetes.

We make it easy to start conversations, share recipes, ask questions about diabetic products, and much more. Our hope is to give you the support and information you need to live a long healthy life with diabetes."

Can this be removed? Also, in the top right hand corner it has the word LOGOUT. Can there be text (Screenname) is logged in.

CALpumper replied March 13, 2008 7:58 AM

I like the idea of showing the User Logged In with their screenname.

I like the intro message but maybe add more of what you can do, actually do and what some things are that can be done (the points for one).

I received an email for a friend request and since I was logged in already, it took me to the "inbox" section. All it showed was Friends (1). I clicked on that to accept. Worked great. But where it took me was not as obvious as it possibly could be.....

I then wanted to add a friend and it seemed difficult to get to that part "easily", I just clicked on everything until I found the Browse, Search. Even then it was not obvious how to add a friend. Maybe add that option on the Users Profile Page?

MRSA under Chronic Infection would be good. Or Skin. It fits in both categories.

Know that I have navigated some more I get the View, Edit, My Activity etc tabs.

Maybe add Profile to View and Edit, make it more to the point.

I think the site has a very clean, nice look to it. Its easy to follow, no obnoxious colors. It doesn't hurt my eyes.

I'd be curious about a blog type feature -- for people to read about others management issues. It might help with the relationship building. I think you gave a place to link a blog, which is helpful... but would that direct a person away from the site?

Well, I've only been looking for a short time, but that's what I've noted so far. It looks good. I'm excited to see how it grows. I was thinking recently that I needed to find more diabetics to interact with -- find out what they do that works, etc. So thanks!

I think when you join everyone should automatically be friends, so you dont have to click through every single person. this way you can browse all the profiles when you can and not have to click invite each time.

Gina - This is an interesting concept. So the idea would be that everyone is automatically friends with everyone. I've been thinking about how this would work. I guess the important piece would be to build something that you allow you to individually "block" another person from contacting or interacting with you.

TBOzarka1 replied March 14, 2008 6:13 AM

I like the feature of beign able to add friends instead of being friends with everyone.

There is a lot of personal information out there and I would not want some random person seeing my information or even medical information for that matter.

TRKnight2007 replied March 14, 2008 9:16 AM

TBO - You can go to Privacy Manager and set who you want to share your conditions with. We are going to working on setting that privacy by particular condition rather than all or none.

Diabetic Connect Member joeyd
joeyd
joeyd replied March 13, 2008 12:23 PM

one feature to consider would be to allow users the ability to add multiple friends at once, similar to the functionality on facebook.

additionally, i think it's important that the default setting for the personal health profile be set to 'no one'. by setting it as a default, it would mitigate any risks of personal information being shared unknowingly.

all in all, though, this site is an EXCELLENT resource. i'm excited about the launch and look forward to watching it grow.

So far I think it is pretty good, I like that there is a section for video, and that you can watch and upload your own. Although I'm not quite sure what the point system is?? Does anyone?

CALpumper replied March 13, 2008 9:47 PM

Stick It Designs, the point system, one of my first questions too!
I finally found the section where it explains that you earn points for certain activities completed: request a friend, start a discussion, add a news article, add a comment.....
Then it adds up to a certain total, the more points the more activity you have on the site. This shows the other users that you have been involved on the site. Since this is a community of those offering and needing support/information it shows others you are trustworthy to contact. I know I am totally paraphrasing but I hope that helps!

Btw TRKnight 2007, it is the Comment Section to News & Articles where there is no paragraph break. ;-)

TRKnight2007 replied March 13, 2008 9:56 PM

CALpumper - thanks for the heads-up. Yes, you are right about points. The more you interact the more points you get, the more trust you build with the community. I've been toying with other ideas - - special webex meetings for activity leaders with noted authors, clinical researchers, physicians, etc. I'd love some ideas from the community about how to reward the highest earners.

Diabetic Connect Member Amy Tenderich

Amy Tenderich replied March 13, 2008 10:42 PM

I agree with the folks here: Need to be able to "tag" the photos you upload, and also, need to explain the point system. Where is the section explaining points & showing your score? Why should folks care?

Thanks!
- AT

CALpumper replied March 13, 2008 11:36 PM

Funny how we are all using the word points.....
Click on profile in the upper right, My Rating, third Tab, that is where it is explained. I say funny because most activities are tagged as "earn points". Maybe change the tab to My Points?

And Amy is correct, why would users care? If you want them to, some kind of intro would be good. And yes TRKnight2007, some type of reward would encourage others but how would you weed out those that just want to "use" the site for that?

Oh and I love webex!! I take a seminar for work once a month. It is a great setup, easy to use also. It would be a great way for the community to really feel like they are a part of something, make the online/virtual experience feel real. ;-)

I had a hard time selecting "I am a Diabetic". And not because it's not politically correct - the name of the site isn't as much of a turnoff - but being forced to select that language in regards to myself did give me pause. If I have to choose between online communities, this issue will affect my decision.

I have poke around and my basic two cents are it look pretty possibly at the expense of working well. A basic web board has far more functionality, edit, spelling, v code or html, signatures and ease of message reading but doesn't look as cool. Those things are the anti to get into the game and not having them seems like giving up critical stuff. The ADA forums suffered from a hard to use message engine and that more than anything moved me off.

TRKnight2007 replied March 14, 2008 10:09 PM

Badshoe - Thanks for the feedback. I agree that the Discussions need some much needed improvements . . . especially when replying back to other posters. We had some functionality like this that we pulled at the last minute because it needed some more thinking behind it. I'm on the fence. Maybe our current Discussions becomes more like a Yahoo! questions and we put in a traditional discussion board. I'd like to hear other people weigh in including yourself.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned already, but in discussions, there needs to be a way to just see new items (new topics and new replies added). I don't want to have to look through all the discussions just to see if something new has been added.

TBOzarka1 replied March 17, 2008 8:12 AM

I agree with that. Especially this "What do you think of the site?" If you are post 33 you either have to go page by page or scroll to find yours and see if an answer was made. Can you sort by person posing or by newsest post?

CALpumper replied March 17, 2008 11:29 AM

In response to Aaron and TBO,

I agree. Either an auto email that someone has replied, commented to you or what you have contributed, and once you log in it directs you to that.

Or on the user profile page, show which user replied or commented. (activity: show only related to you, not others)

Diabetic Connect Member CALpumper

CALpumper replied March 17, 2008 11:26 AM

Received an email, "user" has sent you a message. It really was a Friend Request. Could you change the auto email Subject?

Yes the body of the email states it is a friend request (the standard one when you choose to send a friend request) but I was looking for a message as that is what the Subject stated.

Very impressive work. I have a couple of comments.

In step 2 of the comments Multiple countries are available but only an option for US states. I think it would be most practical to add an other option and a fill in box when they will be submitting anything other than a US state.

There seems to be a mismatch between the points list and the points total. When I first began signing in it said what I had already done was worth 200 points yet my total after completing it was 160.

When I did entries everything is unformatted removing line breaks. There is no option for item list or other desirable formating. If not too difficult to implement I think this would be desirable.

There are points for inviting friends but I have not found a place to invite friends. This can be one of the best way to promote and grow a site.

Overall, great work on the site so far. I am well impressed.

I don't know the direction you are planning but as a T1 parent I don't have a lot of interest in T2 stuff. Now T2 is a way bigger market and probably a better investment but I don't think of T1 and T2 as even remotely related.

Its kinda fun poking around but if it is heading for a T2 site I will in time loose interest. I can't speak for other T1 families.

TRKnight2007 replied March 19, 2008 7:08 PM

Bad Shoe - The site is equal opportunity. The Discussions will always be divided into Type I and Type II and as people post on the site (news, recipes, videos), they can tag all items. Items tagged with "Type I" can then be searchable when we add that functionality. Thanks.

What about within the actual inbox? A link to email directly from there? If it is there, let me know, did not see it. Thx

Just added some videos.
Suggestions:

1) Most Recent Tab, shows videos in a line at top, shows who submitted. I know down below are the details of the Videos but people are more likely to view the videos if at top the description is there.

2) Once you add a video the only "contribute" link to add another is on the far left, the main link area (is this a frame btw?). I knew I was going to add 3, most people online want to do things quickly. Maybe add the "contribute" link to the message at top that states your video has been submitted?

3) I swear there was something else but I cannot think of it now!

;-) Figures...I should write this down as I go along.

The only part that gives me concern is the recipe part. Some of the recipe are definitely not for diabetics at all, and should probably not be posted. But I don't know how you screen things. Also, advice is good, but a person should really consult their doctor to get the real skinny on things!
I hope I can learn a lot from this space. So far I am learning.

Hi Nurse,

I think Doctors should be our best source of information but the reality is ADA and mainstream medicine is a few years behind the curve on the best ways to treat type 2 diabetes and that is very unfortunate. We have to live it day to day and learn as we go. I manage sites for type 2 diabetes as well as participate in this site and monitor several other type 2 diabetes sites and email list. Probably the most common complaint I hear from all of them is their doctor not being aware of latest advances conbined with long wait time untill they get to any signifigant training. For Christ's sake, when many are diagnosed they are not even given a meter and taught how to use it properly. Until the medical profession inproves it's act, you can't blame us for trying to share our experiences and trying to help each other.

nurse ratched replied September 12, 2008 9:01 PM

I have no problem with a site like this, I think it's great. And yes, people, like my son and every other diabetic live with and deal with it everyday. I am very aware that a lot of the medical field leave much to be desired when dealing with diabetics and keeping up with the newest meds and treatment. I have quite a few patients that I care for that are not given any training or info about their disease and are very confused. I joined this site to hear about how other diabetics handle their different experiences and hopefully gain some insight into caring for my patients, learn things that would help them and my son. I worry about my son every day because I know every day is a new challenge for him in dealing with his diabetes. I hope to learn a lot from others on this site.

I agree, we should always consult with a doctor for the big decisions, but you know what. We live every day with it, and what I see shared by some people about their doctors, they get more support here. Our discussions are just that, discussions. Our opinions our feelings. I think if we get into censoring or screening too much, there will be limited freedom of expression. None of us are here to replace a doctors' guidence, but we sure can be a sounding board. I love the site and what if offers people like me.

John, while I have you working on the recipe section...what do you think about adding a tips section to that? Sometimes our recipies are not as diabetic friendly as they could be and there are lots of us out there who have ways to make a recipe more helpful to our needs. Even just some basic tips are good. I add them usually in my recipies along with substitutions. Just a thought...somebody stop me! LOL

John and Gabby,

Gabby is right on with her suggestion. The recipe section is pretty weak and no way to rate them or tips on how to improve them. As I look through them there are very few I would concider using. It's nice to have a recipe section but what value is it to diabetics when the people posting them are not aware how bad they are. It is not even their fault in many cases when they think they have a good recipe based on ADA advice which has sugar, potatoes, pasta, white rice and other high glycemic foods in most of their recipes even in thier officially approved recipe books.

steadb replied July 29, 2008 11:28 AM

Toma:

You can rate the recipes but it doesn't appear that many people are. Commenting is another way to put a perspective on the recipe.

Having said that, these elements don't seem to do the trick enough. Let's us do some cycles on how to improve.

S

Gabby replied July 29, 2008 5:50 PM

Just like sharing our opinions and things in discussions, I would hate to see any censorship on the recipe section or the book section or the video section...get my point.
I too use many of the recipies and adjust them and when I leave my feedback, I usually explain how I changed it. (and I always do, it is the nature of my beast)
We each learn what we can and cannot eat, but we don't only cook for ourselves. Sometimes doing something special for our family memebers who are "forced" to endure our diets can make all the sacrifices worth it.
And a lot of times a recipe sounds yummy and we just need to know how to adjust it. That is where a Tips section could be handy.

Hello John, Imso thankful that,You asked for feed back about this site. Theres very few website today that really care about feed back from their users. To me ,This site has proven to be an exception. I greatly appreciate being given the opportunity to provide some feed back. Since arriveing on this site,I have learned more from fellow diabetics and diabetic related sites than,I have from my doctor and her medical team in the past six years. Im not degradeing or putting my doctor or her medical team down. Lord knows that without doctors and their medical training,Our lives would end sooner than later. However when, one considers the massive number of people requireing medical attention, a doctor may or may not think to give all pertinent information to a diabetic patient. That is why, This website,Its founders and last but not least,It members are so vitally important to each others healthy well being. Its also very important that, A diabetic write a list of questions about diabetes and diabets related health problems. If, Your doctor can't give you the answers, check your local news paper and hospitals for support forums. I have spent quite some time tonightreading suggestions as to how this site can be improved. I enjoy all the different functions on this site. Maybe when, I can get a different computer,I can be on this site more often. Im sure that as with any site,Theres always ways to improve it. Right now,I a very happy diabetic considering everything thats available on this site. Im sure that,I won't be diappointed with any futher changes. All,I can say is,Keep up the excellent work. Be safe,be healthy and be happy. John

TRKnight2007 replied July 29, 2008 10:08 PM

Gabby,

Thanks for the suggestions. I thought about a solution tonight. I wonder if the Recipes section should function like a Wiki - - as in we allow members with a certain number of points to go in and edit recipes and provide more "expert" commentary. In a Wiki, other people could add in nutritional facts and/or change recipes where they are appropriate for PWDs.

Keep the good ideas coming . . . we are always listening and trying to figure out ways to make the site better.

Thanks again.

Tony

Toma replied July 31, 2008 1:47 PM

I think a wiki is a great idea and not replace the questionable recipe but add comments about how to improve it. There are obviously bad recipes that shoud be deleted or used as an example of what not to eat and why. Most recipes I look at can be salvaged by better ingredients and better cooking methods.

Gabby replied July 31, 2008 5:44 PM

I don't mind the wikipedia type of method, BUT we should not be able to alter the original, just add to it

If you like what someone has to say, we encourage you to invite them to your friends list.

steadb replied October 13, 2008 9:33 AM

Thanks for the suggestion. We are looking at it. We are managing a lot of projects regarding improving the site. We agree that Chat is an important element to add.

Toma replied October 13, 2008 9:55 AM

Hi Lenore,

I do not make policy for this site but want to weigh in on this. Chat is more immediate and some people like it because of that but there are down sides. I used to own and run a Viet nam vets chat room on undernet a few years back. We had a large membership.

1. Some one has to sit at a computer all the time to keep the chat going. If there is no one to talk to when some one enters the chat room the chat declines and eventually dies.

2. There is no record of the chat so there is not as much free flow of information and the ability to go back to something that was said an hour ago, a day ago, a week ago etc. With the format that is being used you can be part of a discussion that was started months ago such as this one.

3. Chat is more easily abused, especially if there are not moderators monitoring 24/7.

4. Chat is also very resources intensive both in band width and CPU usage using much more of the computers and networks resources than the way it is now.

While chat is attractive in concept it is very difficult to maintain a quality char environment and tends to downgrade to cyber sex and flame wars.

Just my 2 cents worth.

tmana replied October 13, 2008 12:22 PM

Depending on the chat application, a chat room can be available 24/7. That said, it does take two or more people online in the chat at the same time for conversation to transpire.

Some chat clients do allow chats to be logged, as do some of the java-based chat applications. IRC clients and IM-based chatroom clients allow individuals to log their chats; java-based chat rooms generally reserve that function for the owner/administrators.

Chat rooms do not NEED to be moderated -- but moderation is useful for legal reasons (e.g., make sure folk don't use the room for illegal activities) and to make sure the room doesn't degrade into a flamefest or a demonstration of how many socially-unacceptable words can be crammed into what purports to be a conversation.

Diabetic Connect Member tmana
tmana
tmana replied October 13, 2008 12:26 PM

A few of us have been having some issues with folk using private messaging to start long discussion threads with everyone on their friends lists, with no way to leave the conversation. This obviates the security issue of not being able to send messages to people who have not "friended" you and leaves a number of us with DC inboxes full of "spam" and regular e-mail inboxes full of "you have a message in your Alliance Health mailbox".

If the uninterested user deletes the message, the next reply in the thread only reforwards the ENTIRE thread to his inbox. THERE IS NO ESCAPE!!!! WE NEED AN ESCAPE!!!!

John Crowley replied October 13, 2008 12:39 PM

You are absolutely right. We are working on both short-term and long-term fixes right now.

I've started a discussion and asked members to be extra careful when using the inbox. We really want the discussion board to be where messages to more than a few friends are shared. The inbox should be for communicating directly with only a few friends at a time.

Toma replied October 13, 2008 12:49 PM

I do like the extended mass message option. It is like a party line of old but it would be better if we can opt out of a specific conversation that we are not finding useful. There are times when it does spur discussion that is not in the discussion threads. The discussions are not as easy to follow sometimes unless you know they are there. I think both methods have good and bad points.

I realize that once in a while I have posted one that was already there when I did not check closely enough, but when that does happen, at least it is up there again for it to be noticed. That is the only good thing I can say about me making these mistakes. The more recipes we have, the better. After all, we arefrom all parts of the world and we all don't eat the same.

In the book section, I have learned about books I never knew were available. I can't buy them all, but my library has beenable to get the ones I requested.

You may want to trust someone with more points as it may represent someone who has spent more time on the site and contributed to more conversations and has more friends. That doesn't necessarily mean that others who have less points are less knowledgeable or less important.

What I like most about the site is the educational tone presented... there is News and Articles to puruse... recipes to share and discuss. for those who want to blog... the option is here. I find such a wide variety of interests presented in the many discussions. Most are conversational, and allow the participants to pursue personal concerns with those who share an interests in specific topics... Not everyone is drawn to the same topic, so the discussion link up individuals who can best support one another via common interests and concerns.

What I like lest about the site is the point system... I think it's great to validate participation... but not everyone necessarily has the same time commitment to spending hours on the site... It doesn't necessarily mean they are not trustworthy... Just becasue someone has a lot of points could mean they have a lot of time to spend...so I personally don't trust someone just because they have a lot of points racked up... Maybe points can be useful to inspire people to prioritize time on the site... but I fail to see what it has to do with trust building... When people start getting prizes for participating in benevelent practices...I wonder how emotionally mature those who contribute really are... I will feel disappointed if prizes some to the ones who rack up the highest points on this site... I think it will detract from the sincerity of purpose... and I believed that was to educated and inspire healing... in my opinion... that is the reward... I gain trust Trust is something people build by practising appropriate and thoughtful behavior with each other...

A feature I would like to see added is having the ability to delete a member from your friends list if you should decide you want to do that... and I would like a mission statement added that clearly defines what appropriate behavior. guildlines are expected of each member... and have a box with an I Agree to the above statement as part of the joining the site requirement...

Over all... I have only praise for this site... the opportunity to stretch and grow via interaction with others who experience similar health issues, plus the occassion connection with someone you want to share your in box with deepen a bond/connection is very good... I appreciate the invitation to share my opinion in this discussion. That's one more thing that makes this site exceptional... feed back is welcome and the site leaders listen with interest...

Thank you for all the good work you do every day... I enjoy being a member of this site and look forward to seeing it's steady and positive evolution...

One more thing I think this site makes posible is that it allows a diverse group of people to interact with each other, who otherwise may never chance to meet... Tolerance and understanding is a real plus when people from varied backgrounds and experienced can come together... I'll look forward to seeing how what you come up with after getting so much positive feedback... thanks for asking....

Thanks for the praise, it means a lot to us around here. In fact, your comment was passed to me by a coworker, who also really enjoyed it.

Diabetic Connect will be completely upgraded in the next couple months to our new platform, which will provide many nice improvements, including your request to be able to delete friends. You can see where we're going by looking at our new site: sleepdisorderconnect.com

We'll also eventually do away with the "points" system in favor of a "reputation" system that more accurately demonstrates a member's involvement, accuracy, and general helpfulness.

Keep an eye out for the new changes! Thanks again for your great feedback.
