My friends,

We have been approached by a PhD student at the University of Southern California. He is studying the impact of health social networks, like Diabetic Connect. He needs the help of our members in taking a short survey.

Here's the message and the link from Jae Eun Chung, the student conducting the research. This is a great opportunity for us all to learn more about how sites like this one can help people manage their health. So if you have a few minutes, I encourage you to participate.

“I am a PhD Student at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. As an avid user of social networking sites for my own and family’s health concerns, I have become very interested in exploring their values in my academic work and turning my personal interest into a professional one.

I am looking for volunteers to participate in an online survey. The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete, and it asks about things like your feelings and experiences in this online community, and your communication with other people in this community. As a token of gratitude, I am offering a chance to win one of ten $15 Amazon.com gift certificates. I anticipate about 150 to 200 will participate in the survey.

If you are visiting Diabetic Connect for your own health issues and are over 18 years old, you can participate in this survey. If you would like to participate or learn more about this study, please click on the link below:

FYI -It is a requirement (overseen by an Institutional Review Board who approved the study) of researchers who use human subjects in their research, including social or psychological research (as opposed to physiological), to make available the results of the study to the subjects who participated. You should have seen an informed consent document of some sort before you participated that would give you the point of contact if/when you want to know the results of the study.

This was a very interesting and through survey. I found many of the questions showed that he is looking to see see how the social sites help people out. I enjoyed it very much. Thanks for the opportunity.

I did it too and I am really hoping that they inform us of the outcome. It was interesting. I found some of it hard to answer, while I enjoy our online conversations, my nearby (living wise) friends and family are the ones I count on in an emergency and you guys I depend on specific diabetic support - which you are the greatest.
