Thanks to ALL for your comments and support! Know that MY prayers are with ALL OF YOU, TOO! We must stick together, no matter what! My mom used to say,"The less loveable a child is, the more loving that they need!" And I think that holds true of ALL ages! So, Johnna, YES it is WONDERFUL when someone GETS our brand of Humor!! haha--As I was getting ready to leave the hospital in Wichita, my RN told a therapist that I was a Hoot!! I just laughed----it felt so good to know that some get my own brand of humor---

flores replied September 7, 2009 12:37 AM Hello Pat,just how old are you,and you sure can get very onery at times,can''t wait to get to your age and be as "onery" as you.How is your health doing and have you stuck ;your feet in the freezer any more.I havenn't had a chance to write to you or onyone because my wife has been in and out of hospitals since july. She is doing much better now but still has pain on her legs and drs. can't seem to know what to do for it.I am still having swelling on my legs also and the drs. can't figure what is causing it to happen either.But reading up on all my friends theories and jokes just cheers us up a lot.be good and be kind and I will talk to you later. Well, be careful in getting "onery", sometimes it can get one into HOT WATER! haha--I am 77 yrs and feel like, "I have been there, done that" mostly just because I hate to feel that I have lived my life for nothing, taking it too seriously--NEVER have MEANT TO HURT anyone's feelings--just have grown to develop a crude sense of humor, I guess, in order to protect myself.

Hello Pat, I don't believe that anything is going to go bad on your surgery. All of us (your friends) are going to be praying for you to get better and we are going to be waiting to hear from you soon. Thank you ALL for your support! yes, legs in a fridge is a bit much, but so was my GRANDMOTHER! haha--Maybe that is where I get my oneriness!! ha--I will be BACK, I want to see the Drs squirm, that told me that I was IMAGINING My ailments for years, sending me over the edge emotionally too------trying to believe THEM and NOT MYSELF, which was really MY problem---but---maybe this will add to the Drs' awareness to treat emotionally challenged patients with more respect and to LISTEN TO US!! !! Well, I guess that I know better now, don't I? haha--I am going to bed with a lighter heart, thanks to all of YOU!! Hugs and prayers for ALL, Pat Roth

My husband did have blood in his urine in Nov, and we went to the HMO urgent care (NV) and they did cultures for infection and treated that. The other tests suggested he said he would have his VA doctor run, but somewhere that got lost between 2 different facilities. Fast forward to his appt in early June, and complaining of lots of coughing and phlegm...VA doc asked if he wanted a referral to "pulmonary" and husband said yes. Doc ordered a chest X-ray, said it would be needed. Doc called back within the week saying they wanted a CT scan, they saw something and wanted a closer look. The CT scan of the lungs caught the upper portion of the kidneys and the tumor on his right kidney. Doc had him do a CT scan of the abdomen, and that is when they confirmed the tumor, saying it looked encapsulated. VA sent us to San Diego for the pre-op work-up, hospitalized him for 3 days of testing since he is a heart patient (and diagnosed A-Fib to his already heart disease and that will be addressed after his recovery)...tumor came out Aug 10, biopsy determined it STAYED encapsulated (don't wait, go, go, go as fast as you can to the surgeon) so with the removal of the kidney, he needs NO chemo or radiation. My nephew said that the tumor breaks out of the encapsulation around 8 cm in size, and Mike's was 7.5 cm's. It was staged as stage 2 because over 7 cm's, it becomes stage 2...the lungs have some scaring (he smoked), but the pulmonary doc said it is minimal, and he will repeat the CT scan in Dec. Urologist said after we see him this Thurs, for the 1 month check-up, he will have my husband monitored closely and have to repeat blood work and CT scans every 3 to 6 months, so you probably have that to look forward to as well. As for my husband, surgery was on Monday, and he was released on Thurs afternoon. They had him on a catheter til midnight Tues, and nothing by mouth til Wed, when he got jello and broth...no solid food til Thurs breakfast and lunch before they let him leave. Any other questions you might have on his experience, let me know...hugs and prayers, and stay your ornery and positive self, it works miracles in recovering. S2

Guess he has the heart problems and you have diabetes, but both having a tumor and lung issues. You have caught you tumor earlier, I believe, it sure sounds smaller. And, feel free to ask any questions and I will answer as best as I can. I am going to send you a note, I want your email, and I will send you the daily reports I wrote to friends and family on his hospitalization and surgery, and if you want, recovery. I also have a link to an article a friend gave me about Renal Cell Carcinoma that will give you good info, and hopefully make you feel as good as it did me. I did all the worrying in this duo! Also, I had lots of friends and family saying prayers, but the one that meant the most was the friend that sent "Guardian Angels" to surround us during this time. Oh, I sent my husband to surgery with a "rally monkey" we bought at a baseball game in June...the surgeons and nurses said they put it in a sterile bag and let it stay with him during the operation. The fact that both your husband's and mine were caught accidentally on the cat scan, originally for the lung--- I have checked out more info about kidney cancer on the internet, and it is COMMON to catch it accidentally when a scan is being done for another part of the body! How WONDERFUL to be given timely warnings as there aren't that many timely ones!!

You are so right in the research you are reading (that I probable read)...kidney cancer in the early stages doesn't really have symptoms that ring any bells, and it most often found when other body complaints are being taken care of, by accident, if you are lucky. Yes, kidneys bleed a lot or have lots of veins and arteries feeding into it, so if they do a biopsy, it is VERY easy for cancer cells to leak out into the blood stream and invade other organs or bones or marrow...the article said chemo and radiation just aren't very effective in this kind of cancer.
Pat Roth replied September 9, 2009 3:08 PM Hi, Susie2! oh, I just remembered, I was on oxygen for several days that I was up there, I BET that is where it came from--it just surprised me, especially since I have been careful in not taking aspirin and stuff----I used to have a bad problem of bruising, 30 oro 40 bruises on my legs etc, but I was staying up 24-7, more or less, with sick children who had a severe colonc problem. thought that it was Celiac, they also had pneumonia a lot---they called it idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpurera---meaning, "they didn't know what caused the bruising"! hah---that always tickled my funny bone. YOu reckon that we coulc get by with using big names when we were uncertain??!

I know about the "push pill-"-hah-- I had it when I had my colon resection 9 years ago, tis great stuff! ha--When I had my C-section, 45 yrs ago, I had to WAIT , WAIT--got all ancy, then they told me that I couldn't have it for awhile because I was nursing my baby! I also had a cough, always seemed to have had ond, sinus drainage---so that didn't help! I told my surgeon last week if I had to do the c-section over with my present set of coping skills, I would have said,"Forget the kid, give me my drugs!" ha He said he liked my attitude, I told him that it had evolved over the years! So, I think that the surgeon I guess it sounds crude, but life can be crude too--Thanks so much for your info--I am going to go read it again. I was interested in the low grade temp as I am still running it , mostly in the eve when I get tired--even now that I am over that cold etc--I can now sort out the aches and pains and deal with them better. I did a lot (for me) yes and heart was pounding, low grade temp so think that I will back off today--BUT there was so much more that I wanted to accomplish!! I wish that my mind and my body would get it together!!!
imsuzie2 replied September 11, 2009 8:59 AM Oh, Pat, I think I forgot to mention my husband's procedure was what is called "hand assisted Lap"...they did the 3 lap incisions (small) where they inserted the camera and tools, I guess, then they made a 4th incision,a slit, where the surgeon inserted his hand to pull the kidney and tumor out. They say lap procedures are easier to heal from, and this might be something to look forward to.
Pat Roth replied September 11, 2009 2:20 PM The Lap is what they plan for me too--sorry about the lifting and pain--it sure happens!! Life doesn't seem to slow down just because we do! Hopefully it is just temporary. When I had my bladder sown up I was out in my yard, 3 days later, pulling water hose trying to water my poor flowers, and SOMETHING pulled---that spot hurt some for a year or two--not smart on MY part! I about undid the surgery, BUT at least my bladder has NOT fallen clear out again, so guess it is OK--ha--

PTL! I have so thankful that you persisted in being onery and complaining about your health, otherwise, you may not have found the tumor. I will keep you in my prayers for a speedy recovery. Attitude is a big part of recovery and it sounds to me as if you have that down pat.

HELLO PAT, SRRY THAT I MISSED ALL THE ACTION :).... MY 'NET HAS BEEN DOWN FOR 2WEEKS AND I JUST GOT IT BAK UP YESDAY, SRRY 2 HEAR ABOUT UR SITUATION BUT ITS BEST TO REVEAL IT NOW B4 LATER ON IT GETS WORSE.... WELL PAT IVE BEEN OK MA SELF, IVE HAD MORE BAD DAYS BUT IT SEEMS THAT I HAVE A SPELL ONCE A WEEK BUT, I DID HAVE AN REACTION IN MA SLEEP WHERE I HURT MASELF AFTA, FALLING OUT OF THE BED AND BRUSED MY SIDE AND HAD 2GOTO E.R....THEY HELD ME OVA FOR FEW DAYS BUT I'M OK FOR NOW :)

I just got back from my cancer Dr meeting, I am FREE for 6 months, I again, said NO to the daily pill or pills experimental trial, Why should I make myself feel worse, I will live my life to its fullest, I am 77 yrs., and have had a good life, so, on with the show, come what may, I know that God will lead me down the correct path. Thanks for all of your kind support, it has been much appreciated! hugs to all---Pat R

Pat Roth replied October 10, 2009 3:33 AM Well, I HOPE that I made the right choice to NOT get into the experimental program, Dr said I might take one or two placeboes, or another pill that could cause blisters on the inside of my hands and the bottoms of my feet etc--and i just can't go there, even tho there is a SLIGHT risk that they didn't get it all---it was still encased, and even if a large tumor and a grade 3, it is still possible that they got it all, it has not shown up anywhere else, and he things that that spot in my left lung is just a calcified spot from so much pneumonia and bronchitis---Sounds good to me--

You know what, as i continue to stumble along----I had mycancer removed Sept 15th, and I THINK that my BS is slowly coming under control!! I was told to use 1/2 of Glipizide, but it bottomed me out, so cut it into 1/4ths---and still got almost too low---now I am skipping days, not taking anything, eating what I want, but still staying with small amts of sensible food---my high at 10pm, was 131! Now isn't that super??!!

hello Pat,I know it's been a while since we've talked but I have had severe headaches on the left side of my brain. they have run tests but no find anything.going to do another cat scan and hope they find something,The headache gets real bad,and i start sweating,nausead;then I also get sleepy and have had small sleepy spells when I and my wife have to go to Dr. appt.'s.They said one thing that my blood level is too high and started to take small pint of blood from me at a time to see if it helps. But it has made my headaches worse.I also have problems with my digesting certain solid foods,I get nauseaded and cramps and when I do have a bowel movement I bleed a little but the tests they took didn't show anycancer or pollyps. They are puzzleed with me. My wife is having steroid shots for her back and leg pain but that's causing high glucose readings and some eye problems.She also uses oxygen for shortness of breath.She gets nervous if she drives and a little sleepy so she scared if she has to drive.We always say a prayer when we're on the road to get safely to where we're going and also to back home safely.But I'm glad and happy for you that you are doing better just hang in there and enjoy life at it's best.talk to you later andGod Bless you and have a good day.Roger,Lina

Hi, my dear, supportive DC FAMILY!! It is wonderful to be home for a few days before I go back to the big city hospital (Wichita) for surgery!
Yes, surgery! And surprise, surprise, I EVEN didn't have a clue as to the REAL, BASIC, problem until they x-rayed my bad, left lung, verified that I had had many bouts of asthma, leaving large amounts of calcification strung through out it causing some of my difficlty of breathing and not walking to much-- In the phone call-back of the tech reading my chest report, stated that there was something lower than the chest, so back into the room for another cat-scan of my abdomen, but it was nothing to do with my usual colon or even chest problems---there was a large tumor on my left kidney!!!!! Well, now, even I was shocked!! Kidney???!! I absolutly had NO warning that my kidney was having ANY problems, no infections, no blood in the urine---NOTHING, it was an ACCIDENT that they even found it and if I hadn't gone in bawling and shaking about this cold, cough, belly trouble, that was NOT adding up in MY book, let alone the DRs!!! They would not have scanned my chest and caught the corner of this mass!
So THAT is why my left side kept feeling like it was drawing--felt so full, aching clear up into my back under my left shoulder blade, it was NOT the lung, but this mass!! Now how lucky can that be??!! I am sure by the time that mass had started bleeding etc, it really would have been too late, but this way, they put me on oxygen, gave me an IV of Rochen and Vithromax to finish knocking out the rest of that "cold"--breathing treatments that really helped to clear out the rest of that mucous--my body just felt TOO TIRED to finish the fight, felt that TOO MUCH was being drained out of me!!! And it WAS!!! I rested between many tests, have been assurred by my surgeon that it looks 96 1/2% malignant, but it isencpsulated and doesn't look like it has spread yet, there is also a spot in that left lung that needs to be watched-----my dad had died of lung cancer and I had tried to be watchful of that lung, besides it bothers me so much, NOW I KNOW WHY!!
On this site we have discussed many times about our Drs not paying attention to our complaints, try to write us off, convince us that we do NOT know our own bodies! Well, I am here to tell you, LISTEN to your own BODIES! We know the nudges our bodies give us that "things aren't quite right" for whatever reason! Know yourself, then hang firm, not hatefully or they will turn you off----and keep trying to get through to the Drs,,, they are mostly good guys, just tired, and we all get so we don't want to be bothered by anything else---anothersickpatient--or whatever----so may not really listen------but if you KNOW that something is wrong, gently , but firmly, INSIST! Till yOU feel comfortable with YOUR inner self that you have been listened to, THEN a diagnosis reached, working together---
I am not bitter, just thankful that FINALLY the Drs are listening with a new respect----and I am in a better frame of mind by venting to you kind folks on this site and to FEEL accepted even if I have felt ONERY at times---that is OK< IT is a sign that something is wrong and you had better ge on it! To feel that OTHERS DO LISTEN to me---has been the very boost that I have long ,desparately needed!!!
More information for you kind folks, is--they have taken me off of Metformin (hard on the kidneys---who knew????) and Lisinopril as my BP has FINALLY come down and I don't need it---BP was 90/53 in the hosp. so that is ONE more pill gone from my little boxes!! Ha
I have to beoff ASPIRIN for 10 days as the veins to the kidneys are LARGE and they want NO chance of bleeding out---then I go back in Sept 15th to have the left kidney and mass removed, should be in the hospital another 6 days--at least--they said---then home!!! And NOW feel sure that I will feel even better than before--hahha--Well, I HAVE TO!! For pitiesake!!
I have so missed my friends here, could hardly wait to reconnect when I got home, I haven't even eaten dinner and here it is 1pm!! haha-- I can eat better too, but my good habits of careful eathing are paying off, my BS went up to 201, they had something order if it went really high, but I was fortunate to NOT need it---so BS were mostly 123---160 and I even got juices to dring and I sure wasn't getting any exercise!! H A__BUt now I know better than to keep on the Bad Track, and am getting back on, am starting to walk again--so watch out folks, for my dust! Up there they said I was a "HOOT"! I loved it---now I am a Hooter Miss Kansas!! hjah--Pat roth, Kansas---getting cooler tooooo----
