Dré

How are community folks dealing with central obesity sometimes associated with type 2 diabetes?

What food/meal plans and exercises/exercises programs work and work WELL to help reduce fat around the central core region of the body.

Any suggestions, ideas, tips, etc. will be GREATLY appreciated!

I use the Wii Fit program and absolutely love it. I can do it at home and it has a variety of things to do to work on your core muscles. It keeps track of many things like your weight, BMI and amount of exercise you are doing. YOu set goals and it reminds you gently of them. I used to belong to a gym but found I would stick to doing this. Also walk, walk, walk.

these are informative sites Avera, and excellent resources. I especially agree with the need to establish a pattern of eating breakfast on a regular basis… our most simple daily routines can help us establish excelent support for our body's basic need for dependable good habits… finding help is easier than it has ever been thanks to the volume of information we have available. When we start off considering the function of the primary sensory perceptions… taste, sight, touch, sound, smell, it reminds us that after all we live in our bodies… so getting to know how to care for it, is essential… particularly when things go wrong… one thing that is often over looked is the value and importance of establishing healthy patterns… without consistency and application even the best information is useless to us… wisdom is applied knowledge… seting up patterns will make us successful, or keep us in a rut… information is often easier to access than assimilateing it… and making it useful…that is the advantage of discussions and this is why I really appreciate this site… it is a great place to discuss practical applications in wellness goals…

Avera always seems to be able to find great sites. She is such a talented researcher!

I need to work on eating breakfast more routinely myself. I don't know why but I never seem to want to eat when I first get up. Maybe it's just I got myself into the bad habit of skipping that meal altogether to save time… all I am doing though is hurting myself :(

I hear you on that. I usually drink a couple of cups of coffee and eat a peice of toast with peanut butter on it. Not enough I am told. Atleast I eat something. I use to just drink coffee and be on the go. Then about lunch switch to diet vanilla pepsi. I don't drink soda any more. Lol Knowing what you need to to isn't always enough.

The peanut butter part is good… I too had to learn to eat breakfast… I grew up feeling lucky to eat once a day… My biggest lesson in life has been learning how to feed myself… I was always good at feeding others… the givers have the hardest tine learning this I think… You make me laugh Ce… Have you got a taste for poached eggs? I like to poach an egg and mash it up and spread it on toast… avocado spread on a toast is yum too… I am now able to eliminate more carbs… satisfied with one peace of toast, eat one fruit, or even a half a fruit, save the other half for mid morning snack.. and spread peanut butter on an apple slice… I've come to enjoy barley flakes, cooked the same as oatmeal… a couple times a week for bk… I had a hard time deciding what kind of bk food I wanted for the longest time… Sometimes, I like non-traditional foods for bk… and sometimes I eat traditional bk. foods at other meals… It's true for me that colorful food is an appetite enhansement… but that doesn't include M&M's… lol wishing everyone a healthy Bon-Appetite…

This is a great topic of interest to me… I have found weight loss to be challenging for awhile now, due to my metabolism suddenly shutting down due to the shock of a near fatal car accident. I did not struggle with weight gain prior to this… It has been during the following years after the injuries, and recovery period that has led me to do so much search and research for answers… It wasn't until I was finally diagnosed with type 2 diabetes that the searching led me to discover that my pancreas and liver were not funtioning well… one of my initial injuries from the car wreak was a serverly bruised liver, and a rsulting cyst… My life was not the same from that time onward… What I have discovered is that until you can restimulate your metabolism into functioning properply, health issues are going to build and complicate until a formal diagnoses for various diseases are named… But the bottom line… is something was whacked out… and the stress just kept getting bigger and affecting more part of the whole… working on your core muscle control would be my first suggestion… I only can wish someone would have suggested this to me twevle years ago… Next, I would make certain my sleep patterns were well managed… poor quality sleep will affect everything else… without restful sleep you are at risk for even more delay and interuption to recovery… and trauma will interupt your ability to have quality sleep patterns… Third, find your support team… if you don't have help, make sure you create a way to get it… without guilt… we are not intended to get lost in the maze of illness… being compassionate to yourself, as well as accepting it from others is essential dealing with any dis-ease… if you wait until you are resentful about the strain, you will probably alienate the very people you need most to support you… and if this is the case… stop asking those who do not want to support you, and find new people who understand your condition… then be proactive in addressing the need for joy renewal… even if it is a few minues a day to begin with, find someone to laugh with… about anything… schedule in some light hearted activities… belive me… it will do wonders for you… I started off by getting a pile of old Reader's Digest magazines and reading the, The section, "Laughter is the Best Medicine", and when I had conversations with people, I would share the funiest stories with them… soon, people didn't cringe thinking, oh no, she is disabled…and needs help… Before long, people were asking me if they could help me… let's face it, laughter is the best medicine… It didn't mean that I didn't have serious conversations about my health needs anymore… it was just seasoned with a variety of flavored topics… like a good menu…

and last, work on discipline to maintain a regular commitment to your daily regiment… you'll be amazed at how beneficial just knowing your clothing is selected for the next morning, and that after you shower, you'll dress and make you bed before heading to the kitchen for breakfast… just add one simple expectation each week to your routine… and don't be too hard on yourself if you have been depressed and out of routine for a while… give yourself goals that you know you can accomplish and take pride in maintainting… practice strength building by repetitions, just like in building physical muscle… if you strain… you will hurt yourself…
And continually be on the look out for learning ways to add some spice to your life experience… You are now a member of dc, and this is a great resource for sharing and exploring ways to reinvent your life after diagnose… Personally, I think those of us who have a diagnoses are fortunate because we know what we have to do now… So in a nutshell, decide where you are now… what you need to do to get to where you want to be… and enjoy the journey… Do it our own way, in your own time… without comparing your progress to any other… we are each and everyone, an original…Now is the best place to begin… from exactly where you are… Life is a gift/ but there is a phrase from a popular song that goes… sometimes life is a burden, why down in your shoes… keep the music in your soul… and express yourself… It works for me…

Jocelyn You are so right about sleep. The 3rd class I had was about sleep. She had some scary facts about not getting enough rest and how it affects our bodies. I have had to make some adjustments so I get more rest. I can not say it has been easy tho. Now if I could get my body to coperate Been doing the 6 hours or less for years. I think I get 7 most nights now. Lol

Ce, it takes awhile for our body to shift from deeply formed habits… the theroy is that it takes 21 days of not doing something for the body to stop craving it… and even if you mess up an intention on the twentiet day… you have to start over from day one… so the longer you can maintain a new intention… the easier it will be to maintain i long term… It has taken me four years of using a Cpap to redirect my life long sleeping habits in a healthier parttern… I've experienced many successes along this route, only to have to begin again on many occassion… just be gentle with yourself and find ways to feel encouraged even during the set backs… if it took as long to correct a habit as it did to form it, most of us would be doomed… So often I just sigh and say, 'start again'… we only fail when we stop going forward toward our goals…so keep on keeping on… and celebrate every little success along the way… bravo, bravo…
