A West Virginian LOVE POEM

SUSIE LEE DONE FELL IN LOVE,
SHE PLANNED TO MARRY JOE.
SHE WAS SO HAPPY 'BOUT IT ALL,
SHE TOLD HER PAPPY SO.

PAPPY TOLD HER, SUSIE GAL,
YOU'LL HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER.
I'D JUST AS SOON YO' MA DON'T KNOW,
BUT JOE IS YO' HALF BROTHER.

SO SUSIE PUT ASIDE HER JOE
AND PLANNED TO MARRY WILL.
BUT AFTER TELLING PAPPY THIS,
HE SAID, 'THERE'S TROUBLE STILL.'

YOU CAN'T MARRY WILL, MY GAL,
AND PLEASE DON'T TELL YO' MOTHER.
BUT WILL AND JOE, AND SEVERAL MO'
I KNOW IS YO' HALF BROTHER.

BUT MAMA KNEW AND SAID, MY CHILD,
JUST DO WHAT MAKES YO' HAPPY.
MARRY WILL OR MARRY JOE;
YOU AIN'T NO KIN TO PAPPY.

Richard,
I think your poem is cute.Everyone likes to poke fun at West Virginian's, but this kinda stuff happens all over the world. Sad, but true.
And Sarge, from where I come from, our trees have branches on both sides. The family tree don't have branches only on one side! Glad you read it twice, I only had to read it ONCE!

LOL, Where I come from is a small group of islands where the trees might branch but they also seem not to fork all that much and if they do, they come back again.
May I tell you about my mom's sister who is married to my Dad's sister's Husband's brother? I have an uncle who is both an uncle and a 1st cousin to me. Back in the days, small island, people tended to marry locally. People tended not to get about and around so eveyone is related to everyone there. In fact there is a geneologist that has mapped our island and claims to be able to link eveyone on the island as a relitive pre 1960 back to the 1500's.

Thank you. Like you, I found the poem to be cute! And yes, it does happened all over the world. West Virginia ia a beautiful place. With it's gracious mountains and wild life. As John Denver sang,"Almost Heaven".. Not to mention the fresh clean air! ha ha

Cyncyn, I was born in Roanoke, Virginia which isn't very far from the West Virginia border. I went to college at Virginia Tech and that campus is very close to WV.

cyncyn replied July 22, 2009 2:22 AM

Richard,
That too is a pretty place. I have relatives in Virginia Beach and in Chesapeake Va. I love the beach there. But too busy of a place for me. I love the slow pace of the country! lol

cyncyn, where is Cobbs Creek, Virgina? I have a dear friend there but I can't even find it on the map--think that it is an inlet, their son guided boats, ties flies, and such pertaining to the water. So it must be close to the ocean, I gather. Thanks PR

Pat, not sure, but will check into it for you...Cyndi

Oh you guys!! I thought that that poem originated in KANSAS!! hah--The farmers around here are too busy plowing to move far, so usually if they divorce, re-marry, your head swims and swims--trying to sort folks out. Just lately our grandson remarried and his kids and her kids are related, but the couple are nOT! Go figure! It takes more brains that what I have!! ha PR, a Kansan and proud of it! --yeah--

I would love to visit w. Virginia. When my hubby and 4 kids used to travel we mostly went to COl where we hoped it would be cooler! One time coming back home through Pratt, Ks. the bank's thermometer read 105!! Back then we did not have air conditioning--Sweat me a river of tears! Or such! haha--But I guess it is all in what you get used to, I would rather try to dodge the occassional tornado that whips through Ks., against earthquakes that they say leaves the earth trembling a lot out west--I am shaky enough! ha- But would love to visit. PR

There are some wonderful and beautiful places to visit in WV. You should definately try to plan a vacation here.

cyncyn replied July 22, 2009 3:39 PM

Amen! Plus, we have beautiful seasons. All 4 of them, different. And the fall colors are the BEST !!!!

There are alot of people who still think that WV is an impoverished state. Not any more than any other state. There are great vacation spots, tourist attractions, and great people, festivals, fairs, etc. I'm a true blue WV hillbilly and proud of it!!! And, yes, for those who still say different, West Virginia IS NOT a part of Virginia. I have nothing against VA, but we are two different states!!!!!!

Pat Roth replied July 22, 2009 10:05 PM

Oh, I would LOVE to come back east!! In all of our local travels (ha) we never went east, no relatives lived there, I guess. Sounds ideal, I LOVE mts, trees, water, and most states have all, even us, with our red Gyp Hills, craggy, and cedars (a farmers's curse) but attractive, and even deer galore! Yes I said ks, NOT Col, but it is beautiful too!! PR

Pat Roth replied July 22, 2009 10:13 PM

I read more of these posts, you mean that someone thinks WV etc are hillbilly states?!! I had never heard that! Hmm, guess we all have our back country, without plumbn', We lived on our farm for years without an IN HOUSE, but so did most others, didn't know the diff! ha I have fond memories of stuffing carboard inside my shoes and mom cutting out the toes so I could get more wear! But it was in the dirty thirtys, and I bet most have NOT witnessed those HORRIFIC DUST CLOUDS that would rise till they blocked out the sun! mom would wet hankies for us to hold over our noses so we could breathe. then shake the dirt off of our beds before we crawled in, and if one came in the night, you could see where your head layed on your pillow! ETC--I am proud to have been able to witness the worst of those storms, BUT am also thankful that they are in the PAST!
Pardon me, I am going to go swimming in a clean pool! ha--PR

Richard157 replied July 22, 2009 11:43 PM

Pat, did y'all use pages from a Sears and Roebuck catalog for toilet paper in that there out house? That is what we-uns did back in the 1940's. Lol!

Pat Roth replied July 23, 2009 12:15 AM

Hahah--you bet Richard! If we were lucky enough to HAVE ONE! Then a corn cob works nicely! ha Makes one appreciate Charmin! ha--When my husband complains about the texture of the toilet paper, I want to ask him if he would rather trapse out to the outhouse in the snow, and use the ADS! ha---We do get spoiled in a hurry, I guess. The one good thing about "the good old days" was the experiences that now justify the greatness of that indoor plumbn' I do so appreciate not having to pump and carry in the water and wood, used to chop railroad ties and was so proud of myself because I had the WHAM power! I wasn't too big in those days, another thing that has changed, but looking back over what I used to do, NO WONDER!! ha Have a great day! PR

Oh, I forgot to add, I used to walk to school 5 miles, UPHILL both WAYS! ha--PR
