hi, I was diagnosed as prediabetic in March of this year. But the thing is, my numbers tend to indicate HYPOglycemia instead. My AM numbers are rarely above 70, and my bedtime numbers usually run between 140 and 160. Should I be talking to my dr about testing at other times as well? What is your all's opinion about the wide range in my numbers? I do watch what I eat in terms of carbs and I try to graze throughout the day to keep my BS from dropping. I DO tend to spill sugar and protein in my urine, and I leak potassium as well which contributes to my SuperVentricular tachycardia (Rapid heart rate)

Also, what exactly does it mean to be "Prediabetic"?

First off want to welcome ya here. a great group of friends. pre diabetic is a term they use for borderline. It would be a good idea to test at different times to find where you are really running threw out the the day. I had to keep alternating when I tested in the begining to find out where I was. fasting in morning, before meals, 2 hrs after meals, and at bedtime. the good range is 80 to 120 before eating and 90 to 140 2 hrs after eating. So the numbers aren't really bad. But would be more concerned with them getting to low more than too high. Also try to include a banana as regular part of your diet. This helps a lot with the potasssium. If you don't eat anything at night, might want to try and make sure you get a late night snack to see if it helps rise the low mornings... David

dj has offered good advice. Before I was dx as a diabetic,I was hyperglycemic. I was getting too much insulin so I was experiencing Low b.s. I was later dx diabetic. My Dr. told me that my body anticipated that there was a problem so I was secreating too much insulin for the food I was eating. Best advice is to check with your Dr and a Dietician and ask for a food plan. Welcom to DC and Good Luck .Stay Connected.Pete

would like to add that if you get an appointment with a dietician. it's a good idea to keep a log prior to your first appointment of everything you eat and drink for at least a week, how much, and what times you eat or drink it. They usually always ask for you to do this at your first appointment. But doing it on your own prior to your first appointment may save you a follow up. David

Welcome to the site. You will find alot of information here. Unfortunately, as for the questions you are asking, as I do not have this problem, I do not have any answers for you, but I am sure there are others who do.

I am the opposite, as far as fasting BS in morn, mine runs about 120 to 150, then may go lower throughout the day, so I am not the one to advice, but just hang in there, keep in closer touch with your Dr as your variations call for more expertise than what I could give you advice for. Just know that you are NOT alone, and hope you can find your support and insight, here. Best Wishes, Pat Roth

I forgot to add that I was prediabetic for 50 years so did not get too excited when the Dr informed me that it was now a problem---was 170 when I had my second knee surgery. But am currently on Metformin 750, trying to exercise and watch my diet, BUT it is hanging in there at the "help me" range, for lack of a better term. ha---Pat Roth

Thanks to ALL above! I am still adjusting on how to SEE what is being written by others! My BS was 168 a bit ago, 2 1/2 hours after eating a small meal, but checked, and sure enough, I had FORGOTTEN to take my Metformin 750 mg. In a way, it was a relief, BUT in another I am afraid that it does prove that I do NEED to take this new diagnosis more seriously----I so HATE to---But am slowly adjusting as I read others entries and know that I am NOT ALONE! Thanks to ALL! Pat Roth

Thanks Everyone for all your replies! and WOW! what a welcoming group! I'm eager to learn more about my dx. My dr never mentioned anything about a dietician appt so I'll ask about that. I hate the idea of checking my bs so much more often. but I did just test a bit ago as we hadn't had dinner yet and it was156. but I did have some juice about an hour ago.

I hear that fruit juice contains a lot of sugar and will raise your BS quicker than whole fruit. Some here probably know more statistics---my Dr. has NOT been to informative either, which is one reason I discovered this FRIENDLY site! PR

I tend to agree with Pat. I love juice, but if I drink it I want more than I think is recommended. Fresh fruit I think is better as far as sugar, as long as you don't eat too much. I know that whenever I am in the hospital I got a small glass of juice, or a small amount of fruit. I think if you are careful either one is ok. I'm not an expert though, a dietician is an excellant one to speak to.
