Hello, From a big guy Type 2 myself. I also am 6'3' and topped off at 412 lbs, so, been there, done that. Am down to about 300 lbs at the moment. First off, welcome. you are not alone. You have alot to learn, and hopefully, you will learn. Congrats on your 2 year birthday. as you learned in group, life is to be lived, and nothing is free, and change does not happen overnight. So dont sweat it. You have the time to learn. do what seems best for you within limits.
remiglo replied June 24, 2009 7:19 PM Thanks Sarg, lots of god stuff there that I need to know. It's all a blur right now but getting clearer.

Last edited 4 months ago Make Diet Pepsi your friend. Instead of Wheat thins ( l love them too), snack on baby carrots when working at your desk. Celery with a little peanut butter. Put the items on a plate. Throw in a few wheat thins or Shredded wheat on your plate, keep this plate at your desk. Watch that you dont eat it all at one sitthing. Work, take a bite, do some more work. Dont refill your plate. Make it last. I too am desk bound at work. But I get to get up and walk from time to time. |

to know if its a free drink, look at the label and if its zero on both carb and sugar, its a free drink. Ice tea with meals is safe as long as you only put in artificial sugar. |

I never thought I would get used to diet soda, but when I was first diagnosed, I didn't drink anything but water for three days straight. Then I went to a nearby pop machine and got three or four diet pops all different flavors and got them really cold, and ya know, they tasted damn good. I found my favorite and still drink it. Try the Coke zero, it is a little easier to adjust to then diet pepsi, or try pepsi one. You will adjust, it sucks at first, but I think starving yourself of pop for a day or two, helps. You are so ready for anything other than water, and like I said, the colder the better. Good luck, pop was really hard for me. I have been on diet soda for almost a year now. I have also lost 40 pounds thru diet changes. You can do it.
Pat Roth replied July 4, 2009 11:27 PM I have drunk diet sodas for years, while my aging mom wanted the "real thing"! It was so funny for me to take her into McD, she was fairly thin, aged 96 to 98, before she passed. We used to laugh together over our choices. She was NOT a Diabetic either. So mom got the last laugh, as usual!

Hi, Remi here…
I just got my Type II diagnosis 2 weeks ago. I’ve been sort of flying blind and doing what I can to learn more about this. I’m a recovering alcoholic who got sober in 1999 and had a few relapses but have been sober nearly 8 years (not all continuously 2+ years this time). One thing I have learned from recovery is that you cannot change everything overnight, it’s a process and forward progress is what’s most important. I drank to change the way I felt and I also eat to excess to change the way I feel.
I’m 44 …..and I’m a big guy 6’2 weigh 350lbs (fat) use to play sports. I have been sedentary for quite a while now. My legs and feet have been huge for many months and Dr. has instructed me to walk a little farther each day no matter what…just to do it. Despite my size I have a zero heart problems, no problems with cholesterol, and great blood pressure according to the Dr. Aside from being a great big fat guy (not the dr’s words) I’m in remarkably good health…so says the physician. Have settled into the morning insulin and pills twice a day. I’ve been lurking for a few days so I understand what others may have to do daily….I starting to appreciate that fact.
I see the dietician in 1 week and hope they have a workable plan for me. This portion thing just does not look right from yours truly at the table closest to the buffet. Food has always been a ritual of sorts in my family and I took that to the nth degree. I can name every tex/mex, burger, pizza, and bbq joint in every city I’ve lived in. This is not going to be an easy task for me. Suffice it to say I eat like I drank booze….until it was ALL gone.
I‘ve already been bargaining with myself since the dietician is a week away and been sneaking a regular 20oz soda daily, a full sub sandwich a few days ago, payday candybar here and there, etc. I love all foods and things like triscuit or wheat thins and cheese….the only problem is I’ll sit and work and munch away an entire box of wheat thins while working ...then go home and eat dinner healthy or otherwise. I have always loved yoghurt and eat the dannon fruit on the bottom stuff with a handful of plain M&M’s in it (just kidding) I put natural granola with almonds in it for breakfast.
I have always loved veggies, salads, nuts, oats, granola, dark breads, turkey, actually lots of what I perceive to be really decent foods…..but in really decent quantities.
A question……I know the 2 litre Regular Pepsi days are over, I like ice tea with equal and have discovered Arizona Diet Green Tea w/Ginseng (No Calories with Splenda) I like this a quite lot ... could someone tell me if it’s an acceptable “Free” drink.
This diabetic food pyramid portion thing just does not look good at first blush I must tell you. Any input will be greatly appreciated. I’ll apologize in advance to those who might feel I have a cavalier or reckless attitude toward this……it’s how I cope.
